Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: THE BELL DOESN'T RING FOR NOTHING

The first thing Eryx Calder noticed about the school wasn't the size.It was the silence. Not the normal kind of silence—this one felt deliberate, like even the air had been told not to move too loudly.Students filled the hallways, laughing, shouting, dragging bags across polished floors… but somehow it all sounded distant, like it was happening behind thick glass.Eryx stood near the entrance, gripping the strap of his bag tighter than he meant to.Something felt wrong. He just didn't know what yet."New here?"A voice pulled him out of his thoughts. He turned.A girl stood beside him—calm posture, sharp eyes, like she was already studying him before he could study her."Mira Solen," she said simply, as if names didn't matter much here."Eryx," he replied. She nodded once. "I know."That should've been strange. But before he could ask how—DING.A bell rang. Not loud. Not soft.Just… final.Every conversation in the hallway stopped instantly.Even footsteps hesitated.Eryx frowned. "Is that the class bell?"Mira didn't answer right away. Her eyes shifted slightly toward the ceiling speaker."No," she said quietly. "That one is normal."Another pause. Then she added, even quieter:"That one means something else."Before Eryx could ask what she meant—DING.The second bell hit.And this time…The temperature in the hallway dropped. Not metaphorically.Physically.A cold wave rolled through the school like something invisible had just exhaled. Some students stiffened. Some looked down. And a few—just a few—started walking without hesitation.Eryx noticed it immediately."They're leaving class early?" he asked.Mira shook her head."They're going to the gate.""What gate?"She finally looked at him directly. And for the first time, her expression wasn't calm anymore. It was warning him."The Red Gate."A loud metallic sound echoed somewhere far inside the building.Like something massive had just unlocked. Then came the announcement.Calm. Controlled. Almost polite."Red Bell Protocol initiated."Eryx felt his stomach tighten."What protocol?" he asked.Mira didn't answer this time.Instead, she grabbed his wrist."Don't move," she said. But it was already too late.Footsteps thundered through the hallway. Not running.Marching.And then—A third bell rang.DING.Every light in the corridor flickered once. Then stabilized. But something had changed. The hallway at the far end… wasn't the same anymore. It stretched further than it should have.Like the building had just grown in the wrong direction.Eryx blinked. "That wasn't there before."Mira's grip tightened."That's the gate corridor."A cold metallic groan echoed again.Doors somewhere deep inside the school were opening. Not slowly. Not gently.Like they were being forced awake. And then Eryx saw them.Students walking in silence toward the corridor. Not scared. Not confused.Like they had done this before. Some of them were even smiling. That's when Eryx noticed something else.A section of the hallway near the entrance had rows of strange seats.Fixed into the floor.Like waiting stations.Students began sitting on them without being told. One by one.Mira didn't move.Eryx stared. "Why are they sitting there?"Mira's voice dropped to almost nothing."Because they were assigned to.""Assigned for what?"She didn't answer.Because at that exact moment—The seats clicked.A mechanical sound echoed beneath them. Then slowly…The seats began to rise. Not forward. Not sideways.Upward—into the walls. And as they lifted, the students sitting on them didn't scream. They didn't struggle. They just… vanished.Like they had been erased from the room entirely.Eryx stumbled back. "What the—"But Mira was already pulling him away from the entrance."Don't look at them," she said sharply."Why?! What just happened?!"Her answer came in one sentence.Cold.Clear.And worse than anything he expected."They were never supposed to be seen."The ground beneath them trembled slightly.Another sound echoed down the corridor.Deeper this time.Heavier.Like something massive had just taken its first step inside the school. And then—The Red Gate opened.
