Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3 — THE FIRST RULE OF SURVIVAL

The moment the creature stepped out, the air in the corridor changed.

Not just colder.

Heavier.

Like the school itself was holding its breath.

Eryx couldn't see it properly—just fragments of movement inside a shifting shadow, like reality was struggling to define its shape.

Jaxon Vire lifted his weapon slowly.

"Back," he ordered.

But Eryx didn't move fast enough.

Neither did Mira.

Because something about it made the body hesitate before the mind could.

That was the first mistake.

The creature moved.

Not like a sprint.

Not like an attack.

Like it had already decided where everyone was going to be.

One step.

Then another.

And suddenly—

It was closer than it should've been.

A blur of motion slammed into the wall beside them.

CRACK.

Concrete shattered.

Students down the corridor screamed and ran.

But there was no "escape direction" anymore.

The hallway felt like it was folding inward.

"Eryx!" Mira pulled him sharply. "Move!"

He finally ran.

Footsteps echoed behind them—multiple now.

Not one creature.

More.

Jaxon's voice cut through the chaos.

"Don't scatter! That's what it wants!"

But panic doesn't listen to logic.

Students broke formation instantly.

And the moment they did—

The lights flickered red again.

🧠 THE FIRST RULE REVEAL

They reached a narrow side chamber.

Jaxon slammed the door shut behind them.

Silence hit instantly.

For half a second.

Then heavy impacts started outside.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

Mira leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

Eryx turned to Jaxon. "What IS that thing?"

Jaxon didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at all of them like he was deciding whether they deserved the truth.

Then he spoke.

Calm.

Too calm.

"Rule One," Jaxon said.

"Never fight something you don't understand."

A loud impact shook the door.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Jaxon continued.

"Rule Two: The Red Bell doesn't summon monsters."

Eryx frowned. "Then what does it do?"

Jaxon looked at him directly.

"It opens permissions."

Another impact.

Harder this time.

The door bent slightly inward.

Mira whispered, "Permissions for what?"

Jaxon didn't hesitate.

"For them to hunt."

Silence.

Even the panic outside seemed to pause for a second.

Eryx swallowed. "So they're already here?"

Jaxon nodded once.

"Most of them never left."

⚠️ RULE THREE

The door shook again.

A crack formed near the lock.

Jaxon raised his weapon.

And then said the most important thing:

"Rule Three… the school doesn't protect you."

He paused.

"It selects you."

Eryx felt something cold settle in his chest.

"What does that mean?" he asked.

Jaxon didn't answer directly.

Instead, he pointed behind Eryx.

At the wall.

There—embedded slightly above eye level—

Was a faint marking.

A symbol.

A number.

And a name.

Eryx Calder.

His breath stopped.

"That's… me."

Mira turned sharply. "That shouldn't be there."

Jaxon's eyes narrowed.

"It means you've been registered."

A violent crash shook the door again.

The lock snapped halfway.

Jaxon raised his voice slightly now.

"Rule Four: If your name appears anywhere in the system—"

He looked at Eryx.

"—you are no longer a student in the normal sense."

The door burst open.

What came in wasn't just one creature anymore.

Two shapes moved through the opening.

Wrong shapes.

Too fast.

Too coordinated.

Jaxon fired instantly.

The sound was deafening in the small room.

"RUN!" he shouted.

Mira grabbed Eryx again.

This time, he didn't hesitate.

They ran.

Corridors blurred past them again.

But now everything felt different.

The school wasn't confusing anymore.

It was reacting.

Doors closed behind them.

Paths shifted.

Like the building itself was guiding them somewhere.

Eryx gasped. "Where are we going?!"

Mira shouted back, "Safe zone!"

"THERE'S A SAFE ZONE?!"

She hesitated for half a second.

Then said something worse than "no."

"Only if you make it in time."

Behind them, the sound of pursuit grew louder.

Not random anymore.

Focused.

Targeted.

Eryx felt it.

Whatever this thing was…

It wasn't chasing everyone.

It was chasing him.

And then—

He saw it.

Another marking on the wall.

Faint.

Same symbol.

Different names.

Crossed out.

Every single one.

Except his.

He stopped for half a second too long.

Mira pulled him forward hard. "DON'T LOOK!"

But it was already too late.

He had seen it.

And now he understood the rule Jaxon didn't finish.

If your name is in the system…

You don't survive randomly.

You are assigned a role.

And the monster behind them—

Was his.
