Chapter 58 - CHAPTER 57: NO MORE SECRETS

🖤

Cassy didn't expect him so soon, she was at her desk, focused trying to return to something normal when the door opened and there he was, no hesitation, no distance, just… there.

"Is it done?" she asked softly.

Caleb didn't answer immediately, he walked in, closed the door behind him and for the first time he didn't stand across from her, he stood close. "Yes," he said simply.

Cassy exhaled quietly. "…What does that mean?"

Caleb looked at her carefully. "It means the case won't escalate," he said. A pause. "It means the company stabilizes." Another pause. "And it means—" He stopped because this part mattered more.

Cassy waited. "…What?" she asked.

Caleb held her gaze. "It means there are no more reasons to hold anything back."

Silence.

That line landed differently because now this wasn't about business, this was about them.

Cassy stepped closer. "…Then don't," she said softly. A pause. "Tell me everything."

And this time he did. "I knew about the risks before I ended it," he said. No hesitation. "No surprises."

Cassy listened quietly, still.

"I knew there would be legal consequences." A pause. "I knew it would affect the company." Another pause. "And I still chose to walk away."

Silence.

Because hearing it like this fully changed something.

"And I didn't tell you," he added. That part he didn't avoid.

Cassy's chest tightened slightly. "I know," she said. A pause. "But why?" That question wasn't accusing anymore, it was searching.

Caleb exhaled slowly. "Because I thought I could handle it before it reached you."

Cassy frowned slightly. "…Handle it?"

A faint shake of his head. "Control it." That word again, honest now not hidden. "I didn't want you dealing with something I created," he continued.

Silence.

Cassy held his gaze. "But I did anyway," she said softly.

"Yes." No denial, no excuse just truth.

Cassy took a breath. "…And now?"

Caleb stepped closer. "Now I don't decide for you." That line mattered because that was what she had been asking for from the beginning. "I don't filter things," he added. A pause. "I don't wait until it's convenient." Another pause. "I tell you when it matters."

Silence.

And this time it felt different because it wasn't just words, it was understanding, real understanding.

Cassy looked at him for a long moment then asked quietly "…And what about us?" That question wasn't simple, not anymore.

Caleb didn't answer right away because this wasn't something he could say lightly. Finally, "I don't know exactly what this becomes," he admitted. A pause. "But I know I'm not walking away from it."

Silence.

That wasn't perfect, it wasn't a promise but it was real and right now that mattered more.

Cassy's expression softened. "…That's enough for now," she said.

A faint exhale from him, relief not because everything was solved but because nothing was hidden anymore.

Caleb stepped even closer, close enough now that there was no space left between them. "And you?" he asked quietly.

Cassy looked at him, no hesitation. "I'm still here." Simple, clear, chosen and for the first time that didn't feel uncertain, it felt steady, not perfect, not easy but real and sometimes that's the only kind of truth that lasts.
