Chapter 57 - CHAPTER 56: THE MEETING THAT DECIDES EVERYTHING

🖤

The room was quiet, too quiet not tense, not loud just… controlled exactly the way Caleb preferred it but this time he wasn't the only one controlling it.

Veronica was already there when he walked in, of course she was, sitting at the far end of the table, composed, waiting.

"You're on time," she said without looking up.

Caleb closed the door behind him. "So are you." A pause then he took the seat across from her, not beside ,not close, across.

A line drawn, silence stretched between them, familiar but different now.

"This isn't a social visit," Veronica said.

Caleb didn't react. "I'm aware."

Another pause then, "Let's not waste time," she continued.

"Then don't," he replied directly just like always.

Veronica smiled faintly. "I forgot how predictable you are."

Caleb leaned back slightly. "And I didn't."

Silence.

Because that wasn't just a response, it was a reminder of why they didn't work.

"I assume you've seen the effects," Veronica said.

Caleb didn't deny it. "Yes."

A pause. "And yet, you still chose this." That question wasn't really a question.

Caleb held her gaze. "Yes." No hesitation, no regret just truth.

Veronica studied him carefully. "…You didn't even consider fixing it before it reached this point?"

Caleb's expression didn't change. "I don't fix things I don't believe in."

Silence.

That answer hit differently now because it wasn't cold, it was honest.

"And you believe in her," Veronica said not accusing just stating.

Caleb didn't look away. "Yes."

Another pause then Veronica exhaled slowly. "…That makes this easier."

Caleb frowned slightly. "…Explain."

Veronica leaned back. "I'm not here to drag this out," she said. A pause. "I'm here to end it properly."

That shifted something because that wasn't what he expected. "What does 'properly' mean?" he asked.

Veronica met his gaze. "It means we settle."

Silence.

That word carried weight because this wasn't emotional anymore, it was final.

"You withdraw the claim," Caleb said.

Veronica shook her head slightly. "No." A pause. "I adjust it." That made him pause. "Terms," she added. "Clear. Defined. Controlled."

Silence.

Now this was something he understood. "What do you want?" he asked.

Veronica didn't hesitate. "Compensation." A pause. "And acknowledgment."

That second part mattered more than the first.

Caleb noticed. "…Of what?" he asked.

Veronica held his gaze. "That what we had was real."

Silence.

Because that wasn't business, that was closure.

Caleb didn't answer immediately because for once this wasn't about control, it was about truth. "It was," he said finally, quiet but clear and that was enough.

Veronica nodded once. "…Good." A pause. "Then we can move forward."

Silence.

Because now the fight wasn't about winning, it was about ending properly.

Caleb leaned forward slightly. "You get your terms," he said. A pause. "And this ends."

Veronica nodded. "Yes." Another pause. "And her?" she asked. That question wasn't necessary but it was intentional.

Caleb didn't hesitate. "She stays."

Silence.

Veronica smiled faintly. "I figured." A final pause then she stood. "Have your people contact mine."

Caleb nodded once. "It's done." And just like that years of history ended in a quiet room not with anger, not with regret but with something simpler, acceptance.

As Veronica reached the door, she paused then said softly, "Don't waste what you chose." And then she left leaving nothing behind except the cost of everything that came before.

Caleb sat there for a moment alone then stood because now there was only one place he needed to be.

With her.
