Chapter 3 - Mahabharata: India’s Greatest Epic

Chapter 3: The Rise and Fall of Kings

Story 📖

Time moved forward, carrying with it the consequences of Bhishma's terrible vow.

King Shantanu and Satyavati were finally united, and soon, the palace of Hastinapura echoed with the laughter of new life. They were blessed with two sons—Chitrangada and Vichitravirya.

The kingdom rejoiced, for it now had heirs to the throne.

Bhishma, true to his vow, stood silently in the background—protecting, guiding, and shaping the future of the kingdom, without ever claiming anything for himself.

Years passed.

The young princes grew under Bhishma's watchful eye. Chitrangada, the elder one, was brave and fierce, a natural warrior with great pride. Vichitravirya, the younger, was gentler but less confident, often relying on others for support.

When King Shantanu passed away, the weight of the throne fell upon young Chitrangada.

Bhishma crowned him king, fulfilling his duty without hesitation.

At first, everything seemed stable. Chitrangada ruled with strength, and the kingdom respected him. But power slowly began to change him. His pride grew, and with it came arrogance.

He started to believe that no one in the world was equal to him.

And that belief led him toward his downfall.

One day, a Gandharva king—who also bore the name Chitrangada—challenged him. The Gandharva could not tolerate sharing his name with a mortal king who claimed superiority.

A fierce battle began.

For days, the sky echoed with the clash of their weapons. The earth trembled beneath their strength. Warriors watched in fear as the two powerful beings fought without rest.

But in the end…

The human king, Chitrangada, fell.

His pride had cost him his life.

Hastinapura was once again left without a king.

The responsibility now fell upon the younger prince, Vichitravirya.

Bhishma, ever loyal, placed him on the throne. But unlike his brother, Vichitravirya was not strong or confident. He lacked the qualities of a great ruler and depended heavily on Bhishma for guidance.

Realizing the need to secure the future of the kingdom, Bhishma decided that Vichitravirya must be married.

Around that time, the king of Kashi had organized a grand swayamvara for his three daughters—Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika.

Kings and princes from all over gathered to win their hands in marriage.

But Bhishma had already made his decision.

He arrived at the swayamvara like a storm.

Without seeking permission or participating in the ceremony, he challenged all the assembled kings and warriors. One by one, he defeated them with ease.

His power was unmatched.

Then, before anyone could react, he carried away the three princesses on his chariot, declaring that they would be the brides of Vichitravirya.

The kings were humiliated, but none could stop Bhishma.

When Bhishma brought the princesses back to Hastinapura, everything seemed to be falling into place.

But fate had other plans.

Amba, the eldest princess, stepped forward and revealed that she was already in love with King Shalva and had intended to choose him in the swayamvara.

Hearing this, Bhishma honored her wish and allowed her to leave.

But when Amba went to Shalva, he rejected her.

He said that since she had been taken away by another man, he could not accept her.

Heartbroken and humiliated, Amba returned to Bhishma, demanding that he marry her.

But Bhishma refused.

Bound by his terrible vow, he could never marry.

Amba's pain turned into anger… and her anger into a burning desire for revenge.

She swore that one day, she would become the cause of Bhishma's downfall.

Meanwhile, Ambika and Ambalika were married to Vichitravirya.

For a brief moment, it seemed like peace had returned.

But destiny was not finished yet.

Vichitravirya, weak in both body and will, soon fell ill.

Despite all efforts, he could not be saved.

He died young, leaving no heir behind.

Once again, the throne of Hastinapura stood empty.

The kingdom was thrown into uncertainty.

And Bhishma, bound by his vow, could do nothing but watch.

A vow meant to protect the kingdom…

Was now becoming the reason for its instability.

And far away, Amba's anger was growing stronger with each passing day.

The storm had not yet arrived…

But the winds had begun to change.
