Chapter 6 - Mahabharata: India’s Greatest Epic

Chapter 6: The Rise of Rivalry

Story 📖

Hastinapura once again became the center of power and destiny.

After the death of King Pandu, Kunti returned to the palace with her five sons—the Pandavas. The grand halls of the kingdom welcomed them, but beneath the surface, not everyone was pleased.

Dhritarashtra now ruled the kingdom as king.

By his side stood his queen, Gandhari—a woman of immense strength, who had chosen to blindfold herself for life to share her husband's darkness.

But their story was far from simple.

For Gandhari had given birth to not one, not two…

But one hundred sons.

The eldest among them was Duryodhana.

From the very beginning, his birth was surrounded by bad omens. The wise Vidura and even Bhishma sensed danger, warning that this child could bring destruction to the dynasty.

But Dhritarashtra, blinded by love for his son, ignored all warnings.

Duryodhana grew up strong, ambitious… and deeply jealous.

When the Pandavas arrived, the balance of the palace began to shift.

The five brothers were not ordinary children.

Yudhishthira was calm and wise, respected by all.

Bhima was incredibly strong, unmatched in physical power.

Arjuna showed exceptional skill in archery, gaining admiration from teachers and warriors alike.

Nakula and Sahadeva were intelligent, graceful, and loyal.

They quickly became loved by the people.

And that… was the beginning of Duryodhana's hatred.

He could not tolerate their presence.

He could not accept that someone else might be more worthy of the throne.

His jealousy grew day by day, turning into a burning desire to destroy them.

Among all the Pandavas, Bhima became his greatest target.

Bhima's strength humiliated the Kauravas. He would defeat them in games, overpower them in combat, and laugh without fear.

Duryodhana's pride could not bear it.

One day, he decided to act.

With the help of his cunning uncle, Shakuni, Duryodhana made a deadly plan.

He invited Bhima to a feast.

Unaware of the danger, Bhima accepted.

Food was served… laughter filled the air…

But hidden within the meal was poison.

Bhima consumed it, unaware of the trap.

Soon, he fell unconscious.

Duryodhana seized the moment.

He tied Bhima and threw him into the river, believing that this would be the end of his greatest rival.

The water swallowed him.

Silence returned.

Duryodhana smiled, convinced that he had succeeded.

But destiny had other plans.

Deep beneath the river, Bhima was carried to the land of the Nagas—the serpent beings. Instead of dying, the poison in his body was neutralized by the venom of the snakes.

Not only did he survive…

He became even stronger.

After several days, Bhima returned.

Alive.

Unharmed.

More powerful than ever.

When the Pandavas saw him, their joy knew no bounds.

But for Duryodhana…

It was a nightmare.

Fear began to mix with his hatred.

He realized that the Pandavas were not easy to defeat.

And so, his plans became darker… more dangerous.

Meanwhile, the elders of the kingdom—Bhishma, Vidura, and Drona—watched everything carefully.

They could see the growing tension.

They could feel the coming storm.

To control the situation and train the princes, a great teacher was appointed—Dronacharya.

Under his guidance, both the Pandavas and Kauravas began their formal training in warfare.

It was here that Arjuna began to shine brighter than all others.

His focus, dedication, and unmatched skill made him the favorite student of Drona.

This only increased Duryodhana's jealousy.

The rivalry was no longer hidden.

It had begun to take shape.

Friendship had turned into competition…

Competition into hatred…

And hatred into a silent war.

The palace of Hastinapura was no longer just a home.

It had become a battlefield in the making.

And this was only the beginning.
