Chapter 2: The Terrible Vow
Story📖
Years passed, and the young prince Devavrata grew into a strong, wise, and fearless warrior. Under the guidance of great teachers, he mastered the art of warfare, politics, and dharma. The people of Hastinapura admired him, and King Shantanu was proud of his son.
Devavrata was the perfect heir to the throne.
One day, King Shantanu went hunting near the banks of the Yamuna river. There, he met a beautiful young woman named Satyavati. She was kind, graceful, and possessed a mysterious charm. The king fell in love with her and wished to marry her.
However, there was a problem.
Satyavati's father, a fisherman, placed a condition before the king. He said that only the son born to Satyavati would become the next king of Hastinapura.
King Shantanu was shocked. He could not accept this condition, as Devavrata was already the rightful heir. Heartbroken, he returned to the palace, hiding his pain within.
Devavrata noticed his father's sadness. Determined to find the truth, he went to Satyavati's father and learned about the condition.
Without hesitation, Devavrata made a shocking decision.
He declared that he would give up his right to the throne forever.
But that was not all.
To ensure that no future conflict would arise, he took a terrible vow—he would never marry and would remain celibate for his entire life, so that no child of his could ever claim the throne.
The heavens trembled at his words.
The gods themselves were astonished by such a sacrifice.
From that day,
Chapter 2: The Terrible Vow (Extended)
The years passed like the gentle flow of a river, and the young prince Devavrata grew into a man of extraordinary strength and wisdom. Under the guidance of the greatest teachers of that time, he mastered warfare, scriptures, and the principles of dharma. His skills in archery were unmatched, his mind sharp, and his heart pure.
The people of Hastinapura saw in him the future of their kingdom—a king who would bring glory, justice, and prosperity.
King Shantanu often watched his son with pride. Devavrata was everything a father could wish for. Brave, obedient, and deeply devoted.
But fate had other plans.
One day, while hunting near the banks of the Yamuna River, King Shantanu encountered a fragrance so enchanting that it seemed to pull him forward. Following the scent, he came across a young woman sitting by the river. Her name was Satyavati.
She was not a queen, nor a princess—but there was something extraordinary about her. Her calm eyes, her grace, and her mysterious aura captivated the king instantly.
Shantanu fell in love.
He approached her and expressed his desire to marry her. Satyavati did not refuse, but she directed him to her father—a humble fisherman who was wise in his own way.
When the king proposed the marriage, the fisherman listened carefully and then spoke with a condition that would change everything.
"My daughter will marry you, O King," he said, "but only if her son becomes the king of Hastinapura."
These words struck Shantanu like a storm.
He loved Satyavati deeply, but he could not deny Devavrata, his rightful heir. Bound by duty and love, he found himself trapped in a painful dilemma.
Unable to accept the condition, he returned to the palace in silence.
Days turned into nights, and the once cheerful king became distant and sorrowful. He stopped enjoying the pleasures of life, and the weight of his unspoken pain began to show.
Devavrata noticed.
He had always understood his father without words, and now he could sense that something was deeply wrong.
Determined to bring back his father's happiness, Devavrata set out to uncover the truth.
When he learned about Satyavati and her father's condition, he did not hesitate.
Riding swiftly to the fisherman's village, he stood before Satyavati's father and spoke with calm authority.
"I, Devavrata, son of King Shantanu, promise that I will renounce my claim to the throne. The son born to Satyavati shall be the king of Hastinapura."
The fisherman was impressed, but he was not fully convinced.
"What if your future children claim the throne?" he asked.
There was a moment of silence.
The air grew heavy, as if the world itself was waiting for Devavrata's answer.
Then, with unwavering determination, Devavrata spoke words that would echo through eternity.
"I take a vow… that I shall never marry. I shall remain celibate for my entire life. I will have no children. I dedicate my life to the throne of Hastinapura and its rightful king."
The sky seemed to tremble.
The wind stopped.
Even the gods looked down in awe.
Such a sacrifice had never been seen before.
From that moment, Devavrata became Bhishma—the one who took the most terrible and powerful vow.
When King Shantanu heard what his son had done, his heart was filled with both pride and pain. He embraced Bhishma, knowing that such a sacrifice could never be repaid.
As a blessing, he granted Bhishma a divine boon—the power to choose the moment of his own death.
Bhishma accepted it with humility, dedicating his life entirely to the service of the kingdom.
But destiny had quietly taken a turn.
A vow made out of love…
Would one day lead to a war born of hatred.
The seeds of the greatest conflict in history had been planted.
And no one could stop what was coming.
