Chapter 4 - Marked by fate

For the first time, a name refused to leave Adrian's mind. He found himself strangely drawn to it—so much so that, even against his own will, he went to meet Nemesis.

When he saw her house, he was surprised. It was so beautiful, yet she had been walking on the road—didn't she have a car, or did she simply choose not to use one?

Nemesis opened the door. Adrian said, 'I haven't even rung the bell yet… how did you know I came to meet you.

Nemesis said, 'I already knew… you were visible on my video doorbell. Come in.'

They both stepped inside. Adrian was about to say something, but Nemesis spoke first, 'Thank you… for saving me.'

Adrian looked at her and said, 'Your name… it feels like no one else in this world has a name like yours. You're the first person I've ever met called Nemesis.'

Hearing this, Nemesis smiled faintly and said, 'You're right… this is the first time someone has actually called me Nemesis.'

Adrian frowned slightly. 'Why? Don't your parents call you by your name?'

Nemesis's expression changed. 'I have no one anymore… now, it's just me. There's no one for me… and no one with me.

They talked for a long time. Adrian found Nemesis a little strange… but what unsettled him even more was her smile. It felt as if, while talking, she was reading him—trying to understand what kind of person he truly was.

Sitting on her sofa, Nemesis drifted into her thoughts. How is this possible? she wondered. He's not dead… then why can't I hear his thoughts? I can only fail to hear the minds of those who are already dead… but he's alive. Then why?

A chilling idea crossed her mind. Does this mean… he's alive, but his life has already ended?

Adrian turned to leave and said, 'Goodbye. From today… we'll never meet again. I won't be coming back to this city. I'm leaving for America tomorrow.'

Nemesis looked at him calmly. 'I don't know where you think you're going… but you won't be able to reach there.'

Adrian frowned. 'What do you mean?'

Her voice turned cold. 'I'm telling you this because you deserve to know… you're already dead. Stop trying to stretch a life that no longer exists.'

She stepped closer, her eyes unreadable. 'Go back to where you came from… because the book of your life has already ended. There are no more pages left to be written.
