Chapter 17 - Victor Awakens

If it were normal, of course Victor would say stuff like: Human ability is limitless; Nothing is impossible if you just don't give up; If you don't dare chase your dreams, you'll never reach them…

But in this situation, he wouldn't dare say that. If Lucifer is the closest to limitless, then the one above him is truly limitless. Victor's tiny little soul can't handle being compared to an existence like that.

"What the hell are you talking about, Dad?"

Even though she asked, Scarlet knew for sure her dad was scared. Looking at his forehead all unnaturally soaked with sweat and those weird words, she got it.

"You two progressed that fast? You just met and already… like this?"

Victor asked while praying the worst-case scenario wouldn't happen. Otherwise, his life… no, his soul would be done for.

"Relationship? He said I'm his most important one. I'm even more important than you, Dad."

As a 'good' daughter, Scarlet was determined to get revenge because earlier her dad didn't take her side.

"Huh?!"

Victor was so shocked he jerked backwards and knocked over his whole chair. He set the chair back up and sat down with his face on the table to hide the tears falling. His chest felt tight, like he was about to face the biggest despair.

Done… it's all over… He thought getting to know Lucifer was the smartest choice of his life, but he didn't expect his daughter to be this 'good'.

"Pfft, ha ha ha… Where's your mind going, Dad? That guy keeps calling me Slave No. 1."

Scarlet burst out laughing, and her anger faded away with it. Anyway, she really did care about her dad, so even if she joked around, she wouldn't go too far… At least she thought so, because Victor almost had a heart attack after hearing her 'earth-shattering' words.

Sure enough, Victor shot back up when he heard that, wiping his tears clean. His face brightened because he knew his future was looking great now. That whole clouds blocking the path thing didn't exist at all.

"Ha ha ha… This is more like Lucifer. How could he possibly like my daughter?"

As if a weight had been lifted, Victor laughed loudly. The bold, fearless entrepreneur attitude was back.

"Are you kidding me, Dad? Why are you praising the 'enemy' and putting down your own daughter like that?"

Scarlet had called her dad to find someone to trash-talk Lucifer with. But somehow it turned into Victor boosting Lucifer even more and lowering her instead? There was no way she was letting that slide.

"What do you think of Lucifer?"

Victor didn't care much about Scarlet's complaints. Maybe his daughter didn't understand, but he knew exactly who Lucifer was.

"Him… Definitely a bastard, he's so damn cocky… That handsome face, he doesn't deserve to own it."

Maybe Scarlet didn't realize it, but the way she cursed Lucifer had already gotten a lot softer. If before it was like enemies fighting, now it was more like friends teasing each other.

Victor noticed his daughter's face was a little red from embarrassment, and he frowned slightly but didn't show his worry. If his daughter later faced a problem too hard to decide, he'd just try to help however he could.

"That's true… But isn't he really reliable? With his power, if he considers you his subordinate, you'll definitely survive the coming stormy era safely."

What he said was actually his way of subtly advising Scarlet that the coming world would be very dangerous, so don't go wandering around.

"Dad, Lucifer told me killing zombies can awaken special abilities. Does anyone at your place have killed a zombie yet?"

This important news was also something she wanted to report to Victor as soon as possible. In the new era, seizing the opportunity first was an unbeatable advantage.

"Huh? That's weird? Quite a few people at my place have shot zombies dead, but nothing happened."

"If that's the case, then it's probably a weapon issue. Try using melee weapons."

Based on what Scarlet had seen from Lucifer and David, she thought melee weapons were the correct answer to awakening.

"Got it. I'll go test it right now."

Just as Victor was about to hang up, Scarlet's voice came through again.

"Lucifer keeps rambling about wanting to become a savior. He doesn't even kill innocent people because of that, so..."

She originally wanted to advise her dad not to use inhumane methods to turn living people into zombies, but she felt she'd said too much.

Who was her dad? A steel-hearted guy who dared face anything to achieve his goals. Even contacting the Demon King he dared, let alone doing stuff like this.

"Ha ha ha, don't worry, tough daughter. Am I a bad person? I have rules. Even if I kill people, not just anyone gets killed."

Call it a mix of carrot and stick. If he swore he wouldn't kill anyone, now that would be surprising if his daughter believed it.

"Fine. I trust you on this. Just do things in moderation… Anyway, the era is about to not be the era we know anymore."

Scarlet could only sigh helplessly. Killing people… given the current situation, sooner or later she'd have to do it too. It's just that she absolutely wouldn't kill decent people.

"Goodbye, dear daughter. I'm hanging up now."

After saying goodbye to his daughter, Victor's loving gaze disappeared, replaced by a ruthlessly cold one.

"Bring those intruders and prisoners here quickly. It's time for them to show their final value."

As soon as he gave the order, he took a sword from nearby and looked at the tied-up zombie in front of him. His eyes didn't waver at all, and he decisively swung the sword, splitting the zombie's head in half.

At the same moment, inside his body, a change occurred that was difficult to put into words. It was as if his body was urgently 'evolving' to a higher level.
