Chapter 65 - CHAPTER 64: COMING BACK TO EACH OTHER

🌅

The airport felt louder than Kenzo remembered. But his thoughts were louder. Every step forward felt like crossing into something he had already lived in his mind a thousand times.

And still— nothing prepared him for reality.

Sofia was there. Waiting. Not rushing toward him. Not frozen either. Just… present.

For a moment, neither of them moved. Like the world itself was holding its breath.

Then Kenzo exhaled softly. And walked toward her. "Sofia," he said quietly when he stopped in front of her.

She looked up at him. Really looked. Not as a memory. Not as a past version of herself. Not as the girl he left behind. But as someone who had grown without him… and still stood here.

"Hi," she said softly. That simple word— carried everything they had survived.

Silence followed. But it wasn't empty. It was full of years. Distance. Healing. Change.

Kenzo nodded slightly, almost as if grounding himself. "I didn't know what I'd feel seeing you again," he admitted.

Sofia gave a small, almost sad smile. "And?"

He hesitated. Then answered honestly— "I don't feel like I lost you."

That made her breathe a little deeper. Because she understood what he meant.

"I feel like… I found the part of myself I left behind when I walked away," he continued.

Sofia looked down for a moment. Then back at him. "I changed," she said softly.

Kenzo nodded immediately. "I know." A pause. Then quieter— "So did I."

And that was the truth they had both carried separately for too long. They didn't rush. Didn't touch. Didn't force anything. They just stood there— two people shaped by time, distance, and everything in between.

Sofia finally spoke again. "I thought seeing you would feel like reopening something."

Kenzo watched her carefully. "And does it?"

She thought about it. Then shook her head slightly. "No." A pause. "It feels like… understanding it properly for the first time."

Kenzo exhaled slowly. Like something inside him had finally settled. "I didn't come here to restart anything," he said quietly.

Sofia nodded. "I know."

Another pause. Then he added— "But I think part of me needed to see if what we had was really just in the past… or something that still exists in a different way now."

Sofia met his eyes. And for the first time— there was no confusion between them. Just clarity.

"It still exists," she said softly. Kenzo didn't speak immediately. Just let that sink in. "But not the same way it did before," she continued.

He nodded. "I don't want the same way," he admitted. A pause. "I want something that fits who we are now."

Sofia's eyes softened. "And what are we now?"

Kenzo smiled faintly. Not because he had a perfect answer. But because he finally had an honest one. "We're people who learned how to lose each other… and still found our way back without forcing what we were."

Silence. But this one felt different. Not uncertain. Decided. Sofia took a small step closer. Not rushing. Just choosing.

"I don't know what this becomes," she said softly.

Kenzo nodded. "Neither do I." A pause. Then he added— "But I don't think I want to walk away again without trying to understand what we are now."

Sofia smiled faintly. Not the smile of the past. But something newer. Stronger. "Then don't," she said softly.

And that was it. Not a dramatic reunion. Not a perfect ending. Just two people who had once broken apart… choosing to stand in the same space again— with everything they had become.

Kenzo exhaled slowly. "I missed you," he admitted.

Sofia nodded. "I know." A pause. Then softer— "I missed you too."

But this time— it didn't feel like loss. It felt like return. Not to who they were. But to what still remained.

And as they walked out of the airport together— side by side— they didn't promise forever.

They didn't define anything.

They simply started again— carefully, honestly, and finally in the same direction.
