Chapter 66 - CHAPTER 65: THE WAY BACK TO EACH OTHER

❤️

The world didn't pause for them. But their hearts did, just a little.

Sofia and Kenzo didn't rush into anything after the airport. No declarations. No dramatic promises. Just… presence.

Kenzo walked her home that night. Not because he had to. But because he wanted to. The streets were quieter than the airport had been. More real. More intimate.

"So…" Sofia said softly as they walked, hands close but not touching.

Kenzo glanced at her. A small smile tugging at his lips. "So," he echoed.

Sofia exhaled lightly. "This feels strange."

"Good strange or bad strange?" he asked.

She thought about it. Then smiled. "Good… I think."

Kenzo nodded slowly. "Me too."

A comfortable silence settled between them. But it wasn't the same silence they used to have. This one had history inside it. And possibility.

When they reached Sofia's place, she stopped at the gate. Neither of them moved immediately.

"I'm still trying to figure out what to say to you," Kenzo admitted quietly.

Sofia tilted her head slightly. "You don't have to say anything perfect."

He smiled faintly. "That's the problem. I used to think everything between us needed to be perfect."

Sofia shook her head softly. "And look where that got us."

That made him laugh lightly. Not bitter. Warm. "Yeah," he said. "Lesson learned." A pause. Then Kenzo took a small step closer. Not sudden. Not overwhelming. Just intentional. "I don't want to lose you again," he said honestly.

Sofia looked at him for a long moment. And instead of fear— she felt calm. "I'm not leaving," she said softly. Kenzo's expression softened instantly. "But I also don't want us to rush into something we haven't rebuilt properly," she added.

He nodded immediately. "I agree."

Another pause. But this one felt different. Heavier in meaning… lighter in fear.

Kenzo lifted his hand slowly—careful, waiting for permission. Sofia didn't move away. So he gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. The touch was simple. But it carried everything they had been holding back.

Sofia's breath caught slightly. Not from shock. But from familiarity returning in a new way. "You're still you," she whispered.

Kenzo smiled softly. "And you're still the person I never really stopped caring about."

Silence. Not awkward. Just full. Sofia finally stepped a little closer.

Closing the distance they had rebuilt carefully all day. "I missed this," she admitted quietly.

Kenzo's voice softened. "Me too."

He hesitated only for a second— then gently placed his hand near hers. Not grabbing. Not claiming. Just… offering. Sofia looked at it. Then slowly intertwined her fingers with his.

That simple contact— felt louder than everything they had said. Kenzo exhaled like something inside him had finally settled.

"I don't want to mess this up," he admitted.

Sofia smiled softly. "We probably will at some point." That made him look at her. She continued gently— "But I think this time… we'll learn instead of breaking."

Kenzo nodded. "I can live with that."

A quiet pause. Then Sofia said something softer— almost shy. "You still make my heart do that thing."

Kenzo raised an eyebrow slightly. "That thing?"

She nodded, smiling now. "The one where I forget how to act normal for a second."

Kenzo laughed softly. And this time— it felt effortless. "Good," he said quietly. "I was hoping I still mattered like that."

Sofia looked at him for a long moment. Then shook her head slightly. "You always did."

Silence followed. But it wasn't empty anymore. It was warm. Alive.

Kenzo leaned in slightly—not to rush anything, but to stay close. Sofia didn't move away. Not yet. Not ever again like before.

And as the night surrounded them— they didn't become what they once were.

They became something new. Something softer. Something more aware. A love that survived distance… and was finally learning how to exist in the same space again.
