Chapter 50 - CHAPTER 49: STARTING SMALL AGAIN

🌱

They didn't announce anything. No declarations. No promises. Just small choices. That was the agreement without being called an agreement.

Sofia noticed it first in the way Kenzo started calling again— not just texting. Actual calls. Even if they were short. Even if he was tired.

And Kenzo noticed it in the way Sofia stopped overthinking every reply— not because she stopped caring… but because she stopped fearing every silence. It wasn't fixed. But it was different.

One night— Kenzo called her while walking back to his place. The city behind him was unfamiliar. But his voice was familiar.

"Hey," he said.

"Hi," Sofia replied.

A small smile formed on his face instantly. "I just wanted to hear your voice," he admitted.

Sofia paused. Then softly— "Okay."

No teasing. No awkwardness. Just acceptance. They kept walking through the conversation. Talking about small things. Food. Weather. Random thoughts. Things that didn't feel heavy anymore.

At one point— Kenzo laughed softly. "I missed this," he said.

Sofia smiled faintly. "Me too."

But this time— it didn't feel like longing. It felt like recognition. That something familiar was slowly returning. Not fully. Not perfectly. But enough to feel it again.

Later that week— Sofia sent him a photo of her notes. Just messy handwriting. Nothing important.

Kenzo replied: "You still write like that?"

She smiled and typed back: "It helps me think."

He responded: "It reminds me of you."

And she didn't overanalyze it. She just smiled. Because small things like that— used to mean everything. And maybe still could.

One evening— they agreed to watch a movie together. Same time. Different places. But shared experience. No pressure to talk constantly. Just… being together while apart.

Halfway through— Sofia texted: "You're probably more focused on the movie than I am."

Kenzo replied: "I'm watching both."

She laughed softly at that. And for the first time in a while— it felt easy again.

After the movie ended— there was a quiet pause. Then Kenzo said softly— "I think we're doing better."

Sofia didn't rush to agree. She thought about it. Then answered honestly. "We're trying better."

Kenzo nodded. "That counts too."

Silence followed. Not uncomfortable. But calm. "I don't expect perfection anymore," Sofia said quietly.

Kenzo responded immediately. "Good. Because I can't give that."

Sofia smiled. "I know." A pause. Then softer— "But you can show up."

Kenzo didn't hesitate. "I want to."

And that— was enough for now. Because love wasn't being rebuilt through grand gestures. It was being rebuilt through consistency. Through presence.

Through effort that didn't disappear when life got busy. And slowly— the space between them didn't feel as empty anymore.

Not gone.

But filled again.

Little by little.
