Fifty chapters. And somehow— it still felt like they were figuring things out. But this time— it wasn't confusing. It was intentional. The distance was still there. The challenges didn't disappear. But something had changed. They weren't afraid of it anymore.
That night— they were on another call. Not planned. Not scheduled. Just… natural.
Sofia lay on her bed. Kenzo sat by his window.
Two different worlds— connected by something quieter now.
"Can I ask you something?" Kenzo said.
Sofia smiled faintly. "You always say that."
He laughed softly. "Yeah… I guess I do." A pause. Then— he asked the question that had been waiting. "What are we now?"
Sofia didn't answer immediately. Not because she didn't know— but because she wanted to say it right. Not rushed. Not emotional. Real.
"We're not what we used to be," she said slowly. Kenzo listened. "And we're not strangers either." A pause. "We're something in between… but not lost."
Kenzo leaned back slightly. Processing. "That sounds complicated," he admitted.
Sofia smiled softly. "It's honest."
Silence followed. Because honesty— was what brought them back here. "I don't want to go back to who we were before," Kenzo said.
Sofia nodded. "Me neither." A pause.
"But I also don't want to pretend we're nothing," he added.
Sofia's voice softened. "We're not nothing." Another quiet moment. Then she said something that changed everything. "We're choosing each other… without forcing what that has to look like."
Kenzo sat up slightly. That— made sense. Because they weren't trying to label something that was still growing. They were letting it exist.
"And that's enough?" he asked gently.
Sofia thought about it. Really thought. Then answered— "For now… yes." Not forever. Not fixed. But present.
Kenzo smiled faintly. "I can live with that."
Sofia smiled too. "Good."
A pause. Then Kenzo spoke again— softer this time. "I still love you." The words didn't crash into the moment. They settled into it.
Sofia closed her eyes briefly. Then whispered— "I know." A small silence followed. Then— "I still love you too."
No fear. No pressure. Just truth. And for the first time— those words didn't feel like something they had to protect. They felt like something they understood. Not perfect. Not easy. But real enough to stay.
Kenzo exhaled slowly. "I don't know what the future looks like yet," he admitted.
Sofia nodded. "Me neither." A pause. "But I know I don't want to pretend you don't matter to me," she added.
Kenzo smiled. "And I don't want to stop trying."
And that was it. No dramatic ending. No final decision. Just two people— choosing each other again. Not because it was easy. But because after everything— it still felt right.
