Time didn't stop. It just… softened everything. The sharpness of their last conversation faded. Not the meaning. Just the intensity. And what remained— was something quieter. A strange kind of distance that no longer hurt every second… but never fully disappeared either.
Sofia stopped waiting for messages the way she used to. Not because she stopped caring. But because waiting had started to feel like standing in one place for too long.
Kenzo stopped checking his phone every minute. Not because he forgot her. But because each delay taught him patience he didn't know how to use yet. They were still in each other's lives. Just not the way they used to be.
One evening— Sofia sat by her window. The sky outside fading into deep blue. Her phone lit up.
Kenzo. "I finished early today." That was it. No urgency. No expectation. Just… sharing.
Sofia stared at it for a moment. Then replied: "That's good." A pause.
Then another message from him. "How was your day?"
She hesitated. Then answered honestly. "Normal. Quiet."
Kenzo read it slowly. And smiled faintly— not because it was exciting… but because she replied at all. He typed: "Can I call?"
This time— Sofia didn't overthink it. She simply said: "Okay."
The call connected. And for a moment— neither of them spoke. Not awkward. Not heavy. Just… careful.
"Hey," Kenzo said softly.
"Hi," Sofia replied. A pause.
Then Kenzo exhaled. "I miss you," he admitted.
Sofia closed her eyes briefly. "I miss you too."
But this time— it didn't sound like longing that demanded fixing. It sounded like truth they could finally sit with.
"How are you really?" Kenzo asked.
Sofia thought for a moment. Then answered— "I think I'm… learning how to be okay without needing constant reassurance."
Kenzo listened carefully. "That sounds like growth," he said softly.
Sofia gave a small smile. "Or distance," she replied.
A quiet pause. "Maybe both," Kenzo admitted.
That honesty— felt different now. Less like tension. More like understanding.
"I don't want to lose you," he said again. But this time— there was no panic in it. Just care.
Sofia nodded slowly. "I know." A pause. Then she added gently— "But I think we need to stop talking like we already have."
Kenzo frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
Sofia chose her words carefully. "I mean… we keep talking like we're slowly disappearing from each other's lives." A pause. "But we're still here."
Kenzo went quiet. Because she was right. They hadn't left. They hadn't ended. They had just… drifted into uncertainty. "So what do we do?" he asked again.
Sofia exhaled softly. "We rebuild… but differently." Kenzo listened closely. "Not with pressure," she continued. "But with intention." A pause. "And without assuming we already lost something that might still be here."
Kenzo let that sink in. Then nodded. "I can try that."
Sofia smiled faintly. "I know you can."
Another silence followed. But it wasn't empty. It was thoughtful. Balanced.
"I don't think we need to rush back to how we were," Kenzo said.
Sofia nodded. "Good."
"But I also don't want us to stay like this forever," he added.
Sofia agreed softly. "Neither do I." A pause. Then she said something simple— but important. "Let's just start small again."
Kenzo smiled slightly. "Small."
Sofia nodded. "Like this call."
A shared moment of quiet understanding. Not repair yet. Not resolution. But something beginning again— carefully.
When the call ended— neither of them felt fixed. But neither of them felt lost either. And for the first time in a long time— that was enough.
