Chapter 48 - CHAPTER 47: THE SPACE BETWEEN US

🌫

"Slow down" sounded simple. It wasn't. It never is.

At first, it felt like relief. No pressure to reply instantly. No expectation to fill silence. No emotional guessing. Just space. But space— has a way of echoing.

Sofia felt it first. In the quiet of her room. In the gaps where Kenzo's presence used to be constant.

She would reach for her phone— then stop. Not because she didn't care. But because she didn't know what to say anymore.

Across the distance— Kenzo felt it too. In the middle of his busy days. In the moments he almost texted her— then told himself to wait. Not because he stopped loving her. But because he was afraid of doing it wrong again.

Days passed like that. Not empty. But uncertain.

One night— Sofia sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Her phone beside her. Silent. She missed him. That part was still simple. But missing someone… didn't always mean reaching for them anymore. Sometimes it meant learning how to sit with the feeling instead.

Her phone buzzed. She startled slightly.

Kenzo. "Hey… I hope you're okay."

Sofia stared at the message for a long time. Long enough that the screen dimmed.

Then she replied. "I'm okay. Just thinking." It was safe. Honest. But distant.

Kenzo read it quickly. And felt it immediately. Not rejection. But distance taking shape.

He typed: "I miss talking to you properly." Paused. Deleted. Typed again: "Can we call sometime?" Then stopped. Because even that felt like pressure now. He set the phone down. And stared at nothing.

Meanwhile— Sofia saw the typing bubble appear. Disappear. Then nothing. And that silence—somehow said more than words.

The next day— she finally called him.

Kenzo answered immediately. Too quickly. Like he had been waiting. "Hey," he said.

"Hi," she replied. A pause. Longer than before.

"How are you?" Kenzo asked carefully.

Sofia hesitated. Then answered truthfully. "I don't know."

That honesty— hit him quietly. Not because it was bad. But because it was real.

"I feel… distant," she added softly.

Kenzo nodded, even though she couldn't see it. "I feel it too," he admitted.

Silence. Not heavy. But honest.

"I think space is helping me think," Sofia said.

Kenzo listened closely. "But it's also making me realize how quiet everything has become."

That— was the part neither of them had fully expected. Because space was supposed to help. But it also revealed what was missing.

"I don't want us to lose each other in this," Kenzo said quietly.

Sofia's voice softened. "Neither do I." A pause. Then she added— "But I also don't want us to go back to how we were before."

Kenzo closed his eyes briefly. "I know."

Because that version of them— had already broken once. And neither of them wanted to rebuild it the wrong way again.

"So what do we do?" Kenzo asked softly.

Sofia didn't answer immediately. Because there was no easy answer anymore. Finally, she said— "We don't force it." A pause. "We let it be what it becomes… without pretending."

Kenzo swallowed. "And if it becomes nothing?"

Silence. That question— hung there too long.

Sofia's voice softened. "Then at least it ends honestly."

That— hurt. But it was also the first time in a long time— they weren't pretending. Not about love. Not about distance. Not about fear. Just truth.

After the call ended— Sofia sat still. Phone in hand. Quiet. Not crying. Not smiling. Just… processing. Because loving someone from a distance wasn't just about missing them. It was about learning what kind of connection could survive silence. And whether theirs still could.

Across the world— Kenzo leaned back in his chair. Exhaling slowly. Not because he gave up. But because for the first time— he didn't know what came next. And that uncertainty— was heavier than heartbreak.
