Chapter 47 - CHAPTER 46: THE DECISION YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE

💔

After that call— nothing broke. At least not outwardly. No shouting. No final goodbye. Just a quiet shift neither of them could ignore anymore.

Sofia stopped initiating first. Not to punish him. Not to test him. But because she was tired of feeling like she was always reaching into silence.

She still replied. Still answered. Still cared. But something in her had started to pull back. Softly. Carefully. Like her heart was learning how to protect itself again.

Kenzo noticed it immediately. Of course he did. The difference wasn't loud. It was subtle. Shorter replies. Longer gaps. Less emotion in her words. Not cold. Just… reserved.

One night— he finally called her again. She answered after a few rings.

"Hey," Kenzo said softly.

"Hi," Sofia replied.

That alone told him everything. Because "hi" used to be warm. Now it was careful.

"Sofia…" he started. Then stopped. Because he didn't even know where to begin anymore. "I miss you," he finally said.

Silence. Not empty. Heavy. "I miss you too," she replied quietly.

But it didn't sound like relief. It sounded like truth… wrapped in distance.

Kenzo closed his eyes. "I don't like how this feels," he admitted.

Sofia exhaled softly. "Neither do I." A pause. Then she said something that made everything still. "I think I'm starting to accept it."

Kenzo's chest tightened. "Accept what?"

Sofia hesitated. Then answered honestly. "That we might be trying to hold on to something that's slowly slipping out of reach."

Silence. This wasn't anger. Not blame. It was exhaustion turning into clarity.

Kenzo shook his head slightly. "No," he said quickly. "We don't have to accept that."

Sofia's voice softened. "I'm not saying I want to give up." A pause. "I'm saying I don't know how to keep holding on like this."

That— was worse. Because it wasn't about love disappearing. It was about love becoming too heavy to carry alone.

Kenzo leaned forward. "I'm trying," he said again. But even as he said it— he realized something. Trying wasn't fixing it anymore.

"I know," Sofia said gently. And that gentleness— hurt more than anything else. Because she wasn't angry at him. She was just… tired.

"I don't think we're failing because we stopped loving each other," she added. A pause. "I think we're failing because we stopped being able to reach each other."

That— hit too close.

Kenzo went quiet. Because she was right. And there was no easy answer for that. "I don't want to lose you," he said again.

But this time— it sounded less like a promise. And more like fear.

Sofia closed her eyes briefly. "I know."

A long silence followed. Neither of them rushed it. Because rushing would mean pretending.

Finally— Sofia spoke again. "I think we need time."

Kenzo froze slightly. "Time?"

She nodded slowly. "Not a breakup." A pause. "Not a goodbye." Just honesty. "I need to figure out how I feel without feeling like I'm constantly waiting for you to come back emotionally." Kenzo listened. Really listened. "And I think you need space to focus without feeling guilty for not being fully present all the time."

Silence. It wasn't rejection. But it wasn't reassurance either. It was something in between. Something painful. But necessary.

"So what are you saying?" Kenzo asked quietly.

Sofia swallowed. "I'm saying we slow down." A pause. "Not disappear." "But stop trying to force something that's hurting both of us right now."

Kenzo leaned back slightly. Processing. Feeling everything at once. Then, softly— "I don't want this to be the beginning of the end."

Sofia's voice broke just a little. "Neither do I."

And that— was the hardest truth of all. Because sometimes— love doesn't end with a choice.

It ends with exhaustion. With distance. With timing that no longer fits. And neither of them knew yet— what this "slow down" would become. Only that something had changed.

Irreversibly.
