Chapter 71
The silence between both sides did not last long, but it felt like time had stretched just enough for every heartbeat to be heard.
Kael stood still, his gaze fixed forward, his posture steady, his presence unshaken. Behind him, Lyria held onto his arm, her fingers tightening slightly as the reality of what stood before them fully settled in her chest.
The imperial army.
His home.
His past.
His family.
On the other side, the army remained frozen, not out of fear, but uncertainty. Weapons were still lowered, but no one moved forward. No one spoke.
Until Zack finally did.
His voice was calm, controlled, but carrying something deeper beneath it. "Step forward."
Kael did not hesitate. He stepped forward slowly, his eyes never leaving the figures ahead.
Lyria immediately followed, refusing to stay behind this time. "I am not letting you go alone," she whispered.
Kael did not stop her. "Stay close."
They moved together, step by step, until the distance between them and the army became clear enough for faces to be seen.
Alvira's breath caught.
Her hands trembled slightly before she even realized it.
"No…" she whispered under her breath.
Zack's eyes narrowed, studying the man in front of him carefully. Every detail. Every movement. Every presence.
Then he said quietly, almost to himself, "Impossible."
Kael stopped walking.
They were close enough now.
Close enough that truth could no longer hide behind distance.
"Father," Kael said.
The word broke everything.
Alvira let out a sharp breath, her composure shattering instantly. "Kael?"
Her voice carried disbelief, fear, hope, and something close to breaking.
Kael's expression softened slightly. "Mother."
That was all it took.
Alvira moved forward without thinking, stepping out of formation, ignoring protocol, ignoring everything. "Kael… is it really you?"
Kael stepped forward again, closing the distance.
"Yes."
She reached him and touched his face as if she needed proof he was real. "You are alive… you are alive…"
Her voice broke completely as she pulled him into a tight embrace.
Kael held her firmly, not with hesitation, but with a quiet strength that spoke of everything he had endured.
"I am here," he said softly.
Zack approached slower.
His gaze never left Kael.
When he finally stood in front of him, there was no immediate embrace, no visible emotion.
Only observation.
"You survived," Zack said.
Kael met his gaze. "I did."
Zack's eyes shifted briefly to Lyria. "And you brought her with you."
Lyria stepped forward slightly, her voice calm but respectful. "I was never leaving him."
Zack studied her for a moment longer than expected.
Then he nodded once. "Good."
That single word carried more approval than anything else he could have said.
A commander nearby finally spoke, unable to hold back any longer. "Your Highness… we thought you were dead."
Kael turned slightly. "Clearly, that was incorrect."
A faint ripple of relieved laughter moved through some of the soldiers, tension easing for the first time in months.
Alvira pulled back slightly, still holding onto Kael. "Where have you been? What happened? Why did you not return?"
Kael glanced briefly at Lyria before answering. "We were not alone in the forest."
Zack's eyes sharpened immediately. "Explain."
Kael's tone remained steady. "We were found. Not by enemies. By a village."
"A village?" one of the commanders repeated.
Kael nodded. "Werewolves."
The entire army reacted instantly.
Weapons tightened.
Tension returned.
The Queen's voice cut through sharply. "Explain that carefully."
Lyria stepped forward this time. "They saved us."
Silence fell again.
Zack looked at her. "Saved you?"
Kael nodded. "We were both close to death. They could have left us. They did not."
A commander shook his head. "That makes no sense. Werewolves do not spare vampires."
Kael's voice hardened slightly. "They spared us because they saw us as people before enemies."
That statement landed differently.
He continued, "We stayed there for months. They treated us. Protected us. Gave us time to recover."
Alvira looked at him in disbelief. "You lived among them?"
Lyria answered softly. "Yes."
Zack's expression became more thoughtful now. "And they did not harm you."
"No," Kael said. "They helped us."
The Queen stepped forward slightly. "And where is this village?"
Kael met her gaze. "Behind us. Hidden. And not preparing for war."
A commander immediately objected. "That is impossible. They have been organizing."
Kael shook his head. "They have been surviving."
Lyria added quietly, "And they are tired."
Silence settled again.
Zack finally spoke, his voice measured. "If what you are saying is true, then this changes everything."
Kael nodded once. "It should."
The Queen looked between them. "And what do you propose?"
Kael did not hesitate. "We stop this war before it destroys both sides."
The words were bold.
But they were not rejected.
Because for the first time, they were not coming from theory.
They were coming from experience.
Alvira looked at Kael again, her voice softer now. "You have changed."
Kael replied calmly. "I have seen more than we knew."
Zack crossed his arms slightly. "Then we verify it."
Kael nodded. "We can go together."
And just like that, the direction of the war began to shift.
Not through force.
But through truth.
Lyria looked at Kael, her voice low. "We are going home."
Kael looked at her.
"Yes."
And for the first time in a long time, that word felt real.
But far away, in the hidden village, the werewolves had already begun to feel the change.
They had not seen Kael and Lyria for days.
No signs.
No return.
No message.
The village head stood before the gathered leaders, his expression thoughtful. "They have not returned."
One of the leaders spoke. "Then they are gone."
Another added, "Or captured."
The head shook his head slowly. "No. If they were captured, we would feel it. Something else has happened."
Rina stood at the edge of the gathering, her voice quiet but firm. "Kael is not weak. He will protect her."
Some leaders scoffed slightly, but others remained silent.
The head raised his hand. "Whether they return or not, we must decide what comes next."
A leader stepped forward. "What comes next is war. The vampires will not stop."
The head looked at him carefully. "And what if they are not what we believed them to be?"
That caused murmurs.
Another leader frowned. "What are you suggesting?"
The head spoke slowly. "That we may have been fighting shadows of truth instead of truth itself."
Rina's voice came again, stronger now. "They were not monsters."
Silence followed.
And in that silence, something began to change.
A thought.
A possibility.
An idea no one had allowed before.
That maybe the war had never been as simple as they believed.
And maybe, just maybe…
It did not have to continue.
