Chapter 72 - "The First Step Toward Peace"

Chapter 72

The journey back to the palace did not feel like victory, and it did not feel like defeat. It felt like something uncertain, something fragile that could either build a future or collapse everything they had known.

Kael rode beside Lyria, his posture steady, his attention divided between the road ahead and the quiet presence beside him. Lyria held onto him, not out of fear anymore, but out of something softer, something that had grown stronger through everything they had survived.

She spoke quietly, her voice thoughtful. "It feels strange."

Kael glanced slightly at her. "What does?"

"Going back," she said. "After everything. After living somewhere so different."

Kael nodded faintly. "It is different."

Lyria rested her head lightly against his back. "Do you think they will accept me?"

Kael's answer came without hesitation. "They already have."

She frowned slightly. "Your father did not look like someone who accepts easily."

Kael almost allowed a faint smile. "He does not. But he respects strength. You stayed. That matters."

Lyria was quiet for a moment, then asked, "And your mother?"

Kael's voice softened slightly. "She has already accepted you."

That made Lyria smile faintly.

Behind them, Zack rode in silence, his thoughts far from simple. The information Kael had given did not sit easily in his mind, not because it was unbelievable, but because it forced him to question everything he had built his understanding on.

A commander moved closer to him. "Do you trust what he said?"

Zack did not look at him. "I trust that he believes it."

"That is not the same thing," the commander replied.

Zack finally turned his head slightly. "No. It is not."

Alvira rode closer, her voice firm but calm. "He would not lie about something like this."

Zack responded quietly. "I am not questioning his honesty. I am questioning the situation."

Alvira looked ahead. "Then go and see it for yourself."

Zack nodded once. "I will."

---

Days later, the palace stood before them again, just as grand as ever, but this time it felt different to Kael. Not distant. Not cold. But familiar in a way that carried weight.

As they entered through the gates, whispers spread quickly.

"The seventh prince…" "He is alive…" "And his mate…"

Lyria held onto Kael's arm more firmly as they walked through the halls. The attention was overwhelming, but Kael's presence beside her steadied her.

"Do not look at them," he said quietly.

"I am trying not to," she whispered back.

"They will look at you either way," he added.

"That is not helping," she said softly.

Kael's voice lowered slightly. "You are with me. That is enough."

And somehow, it was.

---

In the main chamber, the Queen stood waiting.

Her gaze moved first to Kael, then to Lyria, then back to Kael again.

"You have returned," she said.

Kael bowed slightly. "Yes, Your Majesty."

Her eyes lingered on him. "And you bring with you a story that could change the course of this war."

Kael met her gaze. "Not a story. A truth."

Zack stepped forward. "We need verification."

The Queen nodded. "You will have it."

She turned slightly. "Prepare a delegation. We will go to this village."

A murmur moved through the room.

One of the advisors spoke carefully. "Your Majesty, if this is a trap—"

"It is not," Kael said firmly.

The advisor hesitated. "With respect, Your Highness, you cannot be certain—"

"I am certain," Kael interrupted.

The room fell silent at the authority in his voice.

The Queen studied him for a moment, then nodded once. "We move carefully. But we move."

---

Far away in the forest, the werewolf village gathered once more.

The head stood at the center, surrounded by leaders whose expressions ranged from cautious to openly resistant.

"They have not returned," one of the leaders said. "That alone is enough to assume the worst."

Another added, "If the vampires have them, then we should prepare for retaliation."

Rina stepped forward quickly. "No."

All eyes turned to her.

"They would not harm them," she said firmly. "Not after everything."

One of the older leaders frowned. "You are speaking from emotion."

Rina met his gaze. "And you are speaking from fear."

The tension rose instantly.

The head raised his hand. "Enough."

Silence followed.

He looked at them all before speaking. "We have lived in conflict for too long. We have lost too much. If there is even a chance that what we believe about them is incomplete, then we must explore it."

A leader shook his head. "And if it is a mistake?"

The head answered calmly. "Then we face that mistake. But we do not continue blindly."

Another leader spoke slowly. "What are you suggesting?"

The head's voice was steady. "We open a path for negotiation."

The words caused immediate reactions.

"That is dangerous." "That is weakness." "That is trust we cannot afford."

Rina stepped forward again. "Or it is the only way to stop losing people."

Silence fell again.

This time longer.

Heavier.

Then finally, one of the strongest opposing leaders spoke. "If we do this… there must be a condition."

The head nodded. "There will be."

The leader continued. "They must release the one they have taken."

That changed everything.

Because everyone knew who he meant.

The captured werewolf.

The one taken for study.

The one whose absence had not been forgotten.

The head nodded slowly. "Then that will be our demand."

---

Back at the palace, Zack stood in his chamber, staring at the restrained figure before him.

The captured werewolf.

His most valuable subject.

His greatest source of understanding.

He spoke quietly, almost to himself. "You may be the key to ending this war."

The werewolf glared at him. "Or the reason it never ends."

Zack observed him carefully. "That depends on what happens next."

A knock came at the door.

Zack did not turn. "Enter."

Kael stepped inside.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Kael said, "They will ask for him."

Zack nodded slightly. "I know."

Kael's voice remained calm. "And we will give him back."

Zack finally turned fully toward him. "You say that easily."

Kael met his gaze. "It is not easy. It is necessary."

Zack studied him for a long moment. "You have changed."

Kael replied simply. "So has the world."

Zack looked back at the restrained werewolf. "He is valuable."

Kael stepped closer. "Peace is more valuable."

A long silence followed.

Then Zack exhaled slowly.

"And if this fails?"

Kael answered without hesitation. "Then we deal with that failure. But we do not create it ourselves."

Zack looked at him again.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

"Prepare him."

---

And just like that, the first real step toward peace was set into motion.

But beneath that fragile hope, something else was building quietly.

Because even as both sides began to move toward understanding…

Not everyone believed in peace.

And not every truth had been revealed yet.
