Chapter 70
The forest changed before anything could be seen. It was not something visible at first, but something felt. The air grew heavier, the silence became deeper, and even the smallest sounds seemed to disappear one by one. Birds stopped calling. Insects went still. The wind itself felt uncertain, as though it no longer knew whether it should move forward or retreat.
Kael noticed it immediately. His steps slowed, then stopped completely. His entire body shifted into focus, his senses sharpening in a way that made Lyria instantly uneasy.
She looked at him carefully. "Kael, what is happening?"
Kael did not answer immediately. His eyes were locked ahead, scanning through the trees, reading the forest as though it was no longer just nature but a message. "Do not move further."
Lyria frowned slightly. "That is not an answer. What is wrong?"
Kael finally spoke, his voice calm but firm. "We are no longer alone in front of us."
Her chest tightened. "How close are they?"
Kael's gaze did not leave the forest. "Close enough that stopping now does not change anything."
Lyria stepped closer to him instinctively. "That sounds like we are already surrounded."
Kael replied quietly. "Not surrounded. Approached."
She swallowed hard. "By what?"
Kael paused for a moment before answering. "By something large enough that the forest itself is reacting to it."
That made her look around quickly, but everything still looked the same. Trees standing tall, shadows shifting slightly, light filtering through leaves. Nothing obvious. But she trusted his instincts more than what her eyes could see.
"What do we do?" she asked softly.
Kael answered without hesitation. "You stay behind me."
Lyria immediately shook her head. "No. That is not enough. I am not hiding behind you while you face everything alone."
Kael turned slightly toward her. "This is not about bravery."
"Then what is it about?" she asked.
"Survival," he said simply.
That word made her go quiet for a moment.
Then she nodded slowly. "Then I stay behind you, but I am not leaving your side."
Kael did not argue. He only said, "Do not move unless I tell you."
---
Far ahead, the imperial army had also come to a stop.
The Queen raised her hand, and immediately the entire formation halted in perfect discipline. Armor settled into stillness. Weapons lowered slightly but remained ready. Horses stopped moving. Even the smallest sounds of movement faded into silence.
A scout returned quickly, breathing slightly heavier than before. "We have visual confirmation of two individuals ahead."
The Queen's gaze sharpened. "Describe them."
The scout hesitated. "A male and a female. The male is in front. The female is behind him."
Zack's attention shifted forward instantly, his eyes narrowing as he studied the tree line. "Distance."
"Closing slowly," the scout replied.
A commander stepped forward. "Are they hostile?"
The scout shook his head. "No visible aggression. But the male… his energy is unusual."
The Queen turned slightly. "Unusual how?"
The scout struggled to explain. "It is not stable like a pure vampire. It is not wild like a werewolf. It is something in between, but controlled."
That statement created immediate tension in the ranks.
A commander muttered, "That is not possible."
Zack spoke calmly. "It is possible. It is just rare."
The Queen looked toward him. "Your assessment."
Zack stepped slightly forward, eyes fixed on the forest. "They are not part of any known formation. They are either survivors or something we have not accounted for yet."
A commander frowned. "So we treat them as enemies."
Zack replied immediately. "We observe before we decide."
The Queen nodded slowly. "Hold position."
---
In the forest, Lyria felt it before she saw it. The pressure in the air shifted again, heavier now, closer. Her breathing became uneven as she looked toward Kael.
"Kael… they are getting closer."
Kael nodded slightly. "I know."
Her voice dropped. "I cannot see them yet."
"You will soon," he said quietly.
A pause followed.
Then she asked, "How many?"
Kael's eyes narrowed slightly. "More than we can avoid."
That answer made her step closer behind him again.
Kael did not move away. Instead, he subtly adjusted his position, placing himself fully between her and the direction of the approaching force.
Lyria noticed it immediately. "You always do that."
"Do what?" he asked.
"Stand in front of everything."
Kael replied calmly. "Because someone has to."
The forest grew quieter again.
Then, slowly, shapes began to form between the trees. Not fully visible yet, but enough to change everything. Movement. Armor. Figures.
Lyria's voice lowered. "Kael…"
"I see them," he said.
At the same moment, on the other side, the imperial army also saw movement.
The scout raised his hand. "They are visible now."
The Queen's voice sharpened. "Do not engage."
Zack's eyes narrowed further. "Hold."
And then, through the thinning forest, both sides finally began to see each other clearly enough that silence turned into recognition.
Kael stood still at the front of the forest path, his posture steady, his expression unreadable but focused.
Behind him, Lyria stayed close, her hand slightly gripping his arm now without realizing it.
On the other side, the imperial army stood in formation, disciplined and tense, with the Queen at the center, Zack slightly forward, and Alvira watching carefully as if searching for something she could not yet name.
The distance between them was no longer large.
Only a few steps of forest remained.
Kael took one step forward.
On the other side, Zack raised his hand slightly.
And both sides stopped completely.
Because something in the shape of the man standing ahead of them was beginning to feel wrong in a way no one could immediately explain.
Familiar.
Impossible.
And deeply unsettling.
Lyria whispered behind Kael, "What is happening?"
Kael did not look away. "We are being recognized."
Zack said quietly on the other side, "Something is not adding up."
And in that moment, the forest held its breath.
Because the truth was now close enough to touch.
And no one yet understood what it meant.
