Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 — The Next Signal

They didn't slow down.

The moment they left, their pace remained steady—faster than before, cleaner, more controlled. The forest no longer felt like something they had to struggle through. They moved through it.

Branches didn't catch.

Steps didn't slip.

Every movement had intent.

Lin Mo led without looking back often. He didn't need to. Shi Yue stayed exactly where she should be, adjusting without being told, while Lin An'an remained quiet between them, her presence no longer slowing them down.

They covered distance quickly.

Faster than they ever had.

By the time the sky began to dim again, the terrain had changed once more.

The forest had thinned into scattered clusters of trees, broken by stretches of uneven rock and open ground. It felt less like wilderness and more like a transition—something between places.

Lin Mo slowed slightly.

Not stopping.

Just observing.

"…It's changing again," he said.

Shi Yue nodded. "…Less cover."

"…More exposure."

Neither of them liked that.

But neither of them turned back.

They moved along a narrow ridge, the ground sloping downward on both sides. From there, Lin Mo could see further than before—and what he saw made him stop.

"…There," he said.

Shi Yue stepped beside him.

Below them, at a distance, was another clearing.

But this one—

was different.

It wasn't broken or chaotic.

It was clean.

Deliberately so.

At the center stood a single stone pillar.

Tall.

Dark.

Unnatural.

There were no trees near it.

No debris.

No signs of struggle.

Just—

space.

Shi Yue's expression shifted slightly.

"…Another one."

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Yeah."

Neither of them moved immediately.

Because this time—

they understood what it meant.

A trial.

But this one felt different.

Heavier.

"…We go?" Shi Yue asked.

Lin Mo didn't answer right away.

He studied it.

Watched.

Waited.

Nothing moved.

Nothing changed.

But the feeling remained.

That same presence.

Faint.

Watching.

"…We go," he said finally.

They didn't rush down.

They descended carefully, keeping their awareness spread, watching for anything that might move before they reached the clearing.

Nothing did.

When they stepped into it—

the shift was instant.

The air stilled.

The faint movement of wind disappeared.

Even sound felt muted.

Lin Mo stopped.

Shi Yue did the same.

Lin An'an tightened her grip slightly.

"…It's starting," Shi Yue said quietly.

This time—

there was no voice.

Instead—

the pillar reacted.

A faint glow appeared along its surface, thin lines forming across the stone like cracks of light. They spread slowly, connecting, forming patterns neither of them recognized.

Then—

the ground beneath them shifted.

Lin Mo's body tensed.

The space around them changed.

Not visually.

But perceptibly.

He felt it immediately.

Pressure.

Stronger than before.

Not crushing.

But constant.

Shi Yue's breathing adjusted slightly.

"…Heavier," she said.

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Stay steady."

The pressure didn't increase further.

It just remained.

Unchanging.

Then—

movement.

The pillar pulsed once.

And the clearing filled.

Figures appeared again.

More than before.

Not three.

Not even five.

Ten.

They didn't wait.

They moved.

Lin Mo reacted instantly, stepping forward, pulling the first strike away from Shi Yue while shifting his body to intercept another. The difference from before was clear—he didn't hesitate, didn't second-guess. His movements were direct, efficient.

He struck.

The figure staggered.

Not broken.

Shi Yue moved at the same time.

Her steps were faster now, sharper. She didn't just react—she anticipated. One figure moved toward her, and she adjusted before it reached her, redirecting its momentum and striking immediately after.

The pressure didn't let up.

It made everything heavier.

Slower.

But they adapted.

Lin Mo shifted his stance, reducing wasted movement, letting his actions flow instead of forcing them. He didn't try to overpower. He controlled space.

Shi Yue mirrored that.

They didn't fight separately.

They moved together.

Two figures fell.

Then three.

But the rest didn't stop.

They pressed forward.

Relentless.

Lin Mo stepped back once, adjusting position.

Shi Yue filled the space immediately.

No gap.

They didn't speak.

Didn't need to.

A figure moved toward Lin An'an.

Lin Mo saw it.

He moved.

Faster than before.

Intercepted.

Blocked.

Turned.

The impact traveled through him—but held.

He struck back.

The figure broke.

Seven left.

Time blurred.

Not long.

But intense.

Every second required attention.

Every movement mattered.

They didn't slow.

Didn't break.

Because this time—

they weren't just reacting.

They were controlling the fight.

One by one—

the figures fell.

Until—

only one remained.

It stood still.

Watching.

Then—

it moved.

Faster than the rest.

Lin Mo stepped forward.

Shi Yue didn't stop him.

They met it together.

Not separate.

At the same moment—

they moved.

One step.

One strike.

Clean.

The figure shattered.

Silence returned.

The pressure lifted instantly.

The clearing stilled.

The pillar dimmed.

Lin Mo exhaled slowly.

Not heavily.

Controlled.

Shi Yue stood beside him.

Unshaken.

Lin An'an held onto them both.

Safe.

Then—

the pillar pulsed once more.

A crack formed along its surface.

And something fell.

Lin Mo stepped forward.

Picked it up.

Not a stone this time.

A scroll.

Thin.

Old.

The moment he touched it—

he felt it.

Different.

Not Qi.

Something deeper.

Shi Yue stepped closer.

"…A technique," she said quietly.

Lin Mo didn't respond immediately.

He looked at it.

Then ahead.

Because now—

they understood.

The trials weren't random.

They were leading somewhere.

And this—

was the next step.
