Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 — The Given Path

They didn't rest after that.

The realization settled quickly, and once it did, neither of them hesitated. Lin Mo sat down again almost immediately, the stone already in his hand, while Shi Yue mirrored him without a word. Lin An'an leaned quietly against Shi Yue, unusually still, as if even she could feel that something important was about to happen.

This time, Lin Mo didn't ease into cultivation. He went straight into it. His awareness expanded outward, faster and cleaner than before, locking onto the surrounding Qi almost instantly. But instead of drawing from the environment, he directed his focus to the stone. The response was immediate. The Qi inside it surged toward him—not violently, but eagerly—flowing into his established pathways with a smoothness that felt unnatural compared to anything he had experienced before.

He cycled once. Then again. Then again.

Each cycle completed faster than the last. The Qi didn't resist. It didn't scatter. It entered, followed the path, and settled. His internal flow thickened rapidly, the faint structure he had formed at the First Layer becoming more defined with every pass. There was no wasted motion anymore. No collapse between cycles. Just continuous, accelerating progress.

Across from him, Shi Yue kept pace perfectly. She wasn't lagging behind, nor was she struggling to keep up. If anything, her control was even sharper. Where Lin Mo pushed forward with steady intent, she refined each cycle with precision, minimizing loss, maximizing stability. Their cultivation speeds weren't just fast—they were abnormal.

Minutes passed, but the change was already visible. What would have taken days for others was happening within a fraction of that time. Lin Mo could feel it clearly now—his Qi was no longer thin or unstable. It had weight. Presence. When he guided it through his body, it responded instantly, no longer slipping or weakening midway.

Then the pressure came.

Not from resistance this time, but from accumulation. Too much Qi gathering too quickly.

Lin Mo reacted immediately, slowing the intake and focusing on refinement instead of growth. He adjusted his breathing, stabilizing the flow, preventing it from overwhelming his still-forming foundation. Shi Yue did the same without needing to be told. They adapted in sync, reducing speed just enough to maintain control.

Even then, they were progressing too fast.

Lin Mo opened his eyes after several more cycles, his expression steady but focused. "…This isn't normal," he said.

Shi Yue nodded. "…It's not supposed to be."

Neither of them sounded surprised anymore.

They had already understood.

This world wasn't meant for this kind of growth.

The Qi in the environment was too thin, too scattered. Without resources like the stone, without techniques, advancement would be slow, inefficient, and capped. What they were experiencing now—this speed, this clarity—didn't belong here.

Which meant one thing.

They had been given something that shouldn't exist in this place.

Lin Mo looked down at the stone again. Its surface had dimmed slightly, the flow inside it weaker than before. It was being used up.

A resource.

A limited one.

"…We don't waste it," he said.

Shi Yue nodded once. "…Then we push to the next layer."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

They sat again.

Immediately.

This time, Lin Mo didn't hold anything back. He reconnected to the stone, drawing in the remaining Qi with controlled speed, cycling continuously, refining as he advanced. The process felt smoother now, more natural, as if his body had begun to adapt to the higher density of Qi.

One cycle.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

The flow no longer faltered. The pathways inside him felt clearer, more open, as if something that had been partially blocked before was gradually clearing under the constant movement of Qi.

Then—

the shift came.

It was subtle, but unmistakable.

The Qi within him no longer needed as much guidance. It began to move more on its own, following the established pathways without requiring constant focus. The resistance he had previously felt at the edge of his control was gone completely.

His breath steadied.

His awareness sharpened.

The cycle completed—

and something settled deeper than before.

Lin Mo's eyes opened instantly.

"…Second Layer," he said.

Not a guess.

A certainty.

Shi Yue opened her eyes at the same time. "…Same."

Their voices were calm, but the meaning was clear.

They had advanced again.

Faster than they should have.

Faster than this world allowed.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. The weight of that realization didn't overwhelm them—but it anchored something deeper.

They weren't following the rules of this place anymore.

Shi Yue glanced at the stone in her hand. It had dimmed significantly, the Qi inside it almost depleted.

"…It's nearly gone," she said.

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Then the next step won't be like this."

No more shortcuts.

No more external push.

Whatever came next—

they would have to face it properly.

Shi Yue's gaze shifted slightly, looking toward the direction of the clearing.

"…That thing…" she said quietly, "…it won't stop here."

Lin Mo followed her gaze.

He understood.

That presence hadn't just tested them.

It had evaluated.

Provided.

Accelerated.

Which meant—

this wasn't the end.

It was the beginning of something structured.

Something intentional.

Lin Mo stood up, his movements sharper than before, his body responding with a level of control that hadn't existed even an hour ago. The difference between the First and Second Layer wasn't overwhelming—but it was clear. His reactions were faster. His balance more precise. His awareness broader.

Shi Yue stood beside him, equally composed.

Lin An'an reached for both of them instinctively, and this time, they didn't need to adjust much to accommodate her. Their movements were efficient enough that even that small task felt easier.

"…We move," Lin Mo said.

Shi Yue nodded.

No delay.

No hesitation.

They left immediately.

Because now—

they weren't just cultivating.

They were being guided.

And if that presence truly intended to test them—

then the next trial wouldn't wait.

As they moved through the forest, faster and more controlled than before, one thing became clear to both of them without needing to be spoken.

The path ahead was no longer uncertain.

It had been given.

And they had already taken the first step far faster than they ever should have.
