Chapter 33 - Chapter 33 — Crossing the Line

They didn't stay long after that.

Being seen changed things. Even if the figure hadn't acted, the fact that it existed—calm, controlled, watching without fear—was enough to shift Lin Mo's thinking. Up until now, most of what they had faced had been survival. Hunger, terrain, basic threats. Even the trials, though dangerous, had been contained.

This was different.

This was someone who belonged to this world in a way they did not.

Lin Mo adjusted their route slightly, not to avoid entirely, but to reduce unnecessary exposure. The open terrain stretched ahead in broken ridges and shallow dips, offering some cover if used properly. He chose paths that allowed visibility without making them easy targets.

Shi Yue followed without question, her attention sharper now. Lin An'an remained quiet, sensing the change even if she didn't understand it.

They moved faster.

Not recklessly.

But with purpose.

The sooner they crossed this area, the better.

The sun dipped lower, and with it came longer shadows. The land ahead began to change again, rising gradually. What had been scattered ridges turned into uneven slopes, leading toward higher ground. The terrain grew harsher, less traveled.

Fewer signs of people.

More signs of neglect.

By the time dusk settled, they had reached the base of a rocky incline. It wasn't steep enough to climb with difficulty, but it offered something important—height.

Lin Mo stopped briefly.

"…We go up," he said.

Shi Yue nodded.

No argument.

The climb wasn't easy, but it wasn't slow either. Their movements had improved enough that even unstable ground didn't hinder them much. They adjusted naturally, shifting weight, maintaining balance without wasting energy.

By the time they reached the top, the sky had darkened.

But the view—

made Lin Mo pause.

Beyond the ridge, the land stretched out again.

But this time—

it wasn't empty.

Lights.

Faint.

Scattered.

A settlement.

Not large.

Not structured like a city.

But organized enough to be something more than a village.

Shi Yue stepped beside him, her gaze fixed ahead.

"…People," she said.

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Yeah."

They stood there for a moment, observing.

The lights were steady, not moving like torches. Buildings were faintly visible even from a distance. Paths could be seen, connecting different parts of the settlement.

This wasn't survival.

This was structure.

"…We go down?" Shi Yue asked.

Lin Mo didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved across the area, taking in everything—the layout, the positioning, the lack of visible defenses, the absence of chaos. It didn't look like a place under constant threat.

Which meant—

rules.

"…We don't rush in," he said.

Shi Yue nodded.

"…We observe first."

They moved along the ridge instead of descending immediately, keeping their distance while adjusting their position for a better view. From a slightly different angle, more details became visible.

People moved below.

Slowly.

Normally.

No panic.

No urgency.

Which meant—

whatever dangers existed in this world—

were not immediate here.

That alone made it more dangerous.

Lin Mo exhaled slowly.

"…This is different from the village."

Shi Yue understood.

"…They have something."

Not just food.

Not just shelter.

Something else.

Lin Mo's hand tightened slightly.

"…Strength."

Not overwhelming.

But enough to stabilize a place like this.

Shi Yue glanced at him.

"…And us?"

Lin Mo looked ahead.

"…Not enough yet."

Not weakness.

Just reality.

A short silence followed.

Then—

"…We still go," Shi Yue said.

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Yeah."

Because avoiding it wasn't an option.

They needed information.

Resources.

Understanding.

And this was the first place that could offer all three.

They descended slowly.

Not directly toward the center, but toward the outer edges, where fewer people were visible. The closer they got, the clearer everything became. The buildings were simple but stable, made from wood and stone, not patched together like the ones in their village.

Paths were worn but maintained.

There was order.

Lin Mo slowed as they reached the outskirts.

This was the line.

Behind them—

survival.

Ahead—

something else.

Shi Yue stepped beside him.

Close.

"…Ready?" she asked quietly.

Lin Mo glanced at her.

Then nodded.

"…We move."

They stepped forward.

And crossed into a world that would no longer ignore them.
