Chapter 8 - THE LINE SHE CROSSED

The next morning felt different.

Ayla could sense it the moment she stepped out of her room. The mansion was quieter than usual, but it wasn't peaceful. It felt like something was waiting to happen.

Like a storm that hadn't hit yet.

She walked down the hallway slowly, her thoughts still tangled from the night before. Zayn's words echoed in her mind again and again.

Walk away now... or stay and lose everything.

She should have left.

She knew that.

But she didn't.

And now she had to face whatever came next.

"You look like you didn't sleep."

Ayla stopped.

Lina stood at the end of the hallway, leaning casually against the wall as if she had been waiting.

Watching.

Ayla straightened slightly. "What do you want?"

Lina smiled faintly and walked toward her, her steps calm but deliberate.

"Straight to the point. I like that," she said.

Ayla didn't respond.

She didn't trust herself to.

Lina stopped right in front of her, her eyes scanning Ayla's face carefully.

"You heard us last night," she said.

It wasn't a question.

Ayla's fingers tightened slightly.

"I didn't come here to play games," Ayla replied.

Lina tilted her head slightly. "Then you're in the wrong place."

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

But Ayla didn't back down.

Not this time.

"If you have something to say, just say it," she said.

Lina's smile faded.

And for the first time... her expression turned serious.

"You don't know what you've stepped into," Lina said quietly.

Ayla held her gaze. "Then tell me."

For a moment, Lina didn't speak.

As if she was deciding something.

Then she took a step closer.

"You think this is about a contract," she said. "About money. About control."

Ayla's heartbeat picked up.

"It's not."

A chill ran down Ayla's spine.

"Then what is it?" she asked.

Lina's eyes darkened slightly.

"It's about survival."

The word hit harder than expected.

Before Ayla could respond, footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Zayn.

Both of them turned at the same time.

His gaze moved between them, sharp and unreadable.

"I leave you alone for one minute," he said calmly, "and you start having conversations without me."

Lina stepped back slightly, her expression returning to calm.

"We were just talking," she said.

Zayn didn't look convinced.

His eyes shifted to Ayla.

"What did she tell you?"

The question came fast.

Direct.

Ayla hesitated for a second.

Then she answered.

"Nothing useful."

Zayn watched her carefully.

As if he was trying to read between the lines.

Then his gaze moved to Lina.

"You should leave," he said.

His tone wasn't loud.

But it didn't need to be.

Lina didn't argue.

But before she turned away, she looked at Ayla one last time.

"Remember what I said," she murmured. "This place changes people."

Then she walked away.

The silence that followed felt heavier than before.

Ayla exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself.

But Zayn didn't give her time.

He stepped closer.

Too close.

"What did she mean?" Ayla asked.

Zayn didn't answer immediately.

His eyes stayed locked on hers.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"You're asking too many questions," he said.

Ayla's jaw tightened. "And you're hiding too much."

Something shifted in his expression.

Something darker.

Zayn took another step forward until there was barely any space left between them.

"You should have walked away when I gave you the chance," he said quietly.

Ayla's heart pounded.

"But I didn't," she replied.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Neither of them looked away.

The tension between them rising again.

Stronger this time.

Zayn's hand lifted suddenly, his fingers brushing against her jaw, forcing her to hold his gaze.

"Then don't complain about what happens next," he said.

Ayla's breath caught.

But she didn't pull away.

Because deep down...

She knew one thing.

She had already crossed the line.

And there was no going back.
