Chapter 4 - THE LOOKED ROOM

The hallway felt colder than the rest of the mansion.

Ayla walked slowly, her footsteps echoing softly against the marble floor.

Her mind was still stuck on what she had overheard.

"...since her death."

The words refused to leave her.

Death.

Truth.

Secrets.

It all pointed to one thing-

Zayn was hiding something.

Something big.

She didn't know why she was here.

Maybe curiosity.

Maybe instinct.

Or maybe... something deeper.

Her steps slowed as she reached the end of the hallway.

There, at the far corner-

A door.

Unlike the others.

It was darker. Heavier.

Locked.

Ayla frowned.

Every other door she had seen so far was open, accessible... but this one—

Felt different.

Important.

Dangerous.

She glanced around.

No guards.

No maids.

Nothing but silence.

Her heart started to beat faster.

She knew she shouldn't.

Zayn had made that very clear.

"Don't question me."

But something inside her pushed forward.

She stepped closer.

The handle didn't move.

Locked.

Of course it was.

Ayla exhaled slowly, her fingers brushing lightly against the door.

Cold.

Unwelcoming.

Like it was hiding something that didn't want to be found.

She was about to step back-

When she noticed something.

A small table beside the wall.

And on it-

A key.

Her breath caught.

Was it... really that easy?

No.

This was Zayn Varez.

Nothing about him was simple.

This had to be a mistake.

Or a trap.

Her mind told her to walk away.

But her hand moved anyway.

Slowly...

She picked up the key.

The sound of the lock clicking open echoed louder than it should have.

Ayla froze.

For a moment, she just stood there, staring at the door.

Her heart pounding.

This was it.

The line she wasn't supposed to cross.

The truth she wasn't supposed to find.

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then she pushed the door open.

The room was dark.

Too dark.

Ayla stepped inside cautiously, her eyes adjusting to the dim light filtering through the curtains.

At first, she saw nothing.

Just shadows.

Silence.

Stillness.

Then-

Her gaze shifted.

And she froze.

Photos.

Dozens of them.

All over the walls.

Her breath caught as she stepped closer.

Every single picture...

Was of the same woman.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Smiling.

Alive.

Ayla's heart started racing.

This was her.

The one Zayn didn't want her to mention.

Her fingers trembled as she picked up one of the frames.

The woman in the picture stood beside

Zayn.

But he looked... different.

His expression softer.

His eyes...

Alive.

Ayla swallowed hard.

She had never seen that version of him.

Not once.

"Put it down."

The voice behind her made her blood run cold.

Ayla froze.

Her grip on the frame tightened as her heart slammed against her chest.

Slowly...

She turned around.

Zayn stood at the door.

His expression unreadable.

But his eyes-

Dark.

Furious.

Dangerous.

Ayla's breath hitched.

"I-"

"Put it down."

This time, his voice was sharper.

Colder.

A command.

Her hands shook as she slowly placed the frame back.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Suffocating.

Zayn stepped inside.

The door closed behind him with a quiet click.

Ayla's heart dropped.

She was trapped.

"I told you," he said slowly, walking toward her, "not to cross certain lines."

Each step he took made it harder to breathe.

"I didn't know-"

"That's the problem," he cut her off.

"You don't think."

Ayla clenched her fists.

"You left the key there," she said, her voice shaking but defiant. "What did you expect?"

Zayn stopped.

For a moment, he just looked at her.

Then-

A faint, dangerous smile appeared on his lips.

"I expected you to listen."

A chill ran down her spine.

"So this was a test?" she whispered.

Zayn didn't answer directly.

But his silence said enough.

Ayla's chest tightened.

"You said she's dead," she said quietly.

"Then why keep all of this?"

The question hung in the air.

Zayn's expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

His gaze shifted toward the photos.

For a brief moment...

Something broke through his cold

exterior.

Pain.

Raw.

Unhidden.

"She was mine," he said.

The words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

Ayla's heart skipped.

"And now?" she asked softly.

Zayn's eyes snapped back to her.

Dark.

Empty.

"Now," he said, his voice turning cold again, "she's gone."

Silence.

Then-

His gaze hardened.

"And you..."

Ayla's breath caught.

"...you're just a replacement."

The words hit like a slap.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"A replacement?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.

Zayn stepped closer.

Too close.

"Yes."

His tone didn't change.

It didn't soften.

"You signed the contract," he continued. "You knew what you were walking into."

Ayla shook her head slowly.

"No," she said, her voice trembling. "I didn't."

Zayn leaned closer, his presence overwhelming.

"Then let me make it clear," he whispered.

"You don't take her place."

Ayla's heart pounded.

"You don't get her memories."

His voice dropped even lower.

"You don't get her love."

A tear slipped down her cheek before she could stop it.

Zayn's gaze flickered for a second.

Just a second.

Then it disappeared.

"You're here for one reason only," he said.

Ayla forced herself to look at him.

"And what's that?"

Zayn's lips curved slightly.

But there was nothing warm about it.

"To stay."

The answer made no sense.

But somehow...

It felt more dangerous than anything else he had said.

Zayn stepped back, his expression returning to its usual cold mask.

"Leave."

The word was simple.

Final.

Ayla didn't argue.

She couldn't.

Her heart was too heavy.

Her thoughts too loud.

She walked past him slowly, her steps unsteady.

But just as she reached the door-

She stopped.

Something inside her refused to stay silent.

"She wasn't just someone," Ayla said softly, her back still facing him. "Was she?"

Silence.

Then-

"Get out."

Ayla closed her eyes.

And this time...

She listened.

As the door shut behind her, one thought echoed in her mind-

She wasn't just trapped in Zayn's world.

She was trapped in the shadow of a woman who was still haunting him.

And somehow...

That made everything even more dangerous.
