Chapter 25 - The Mask of Silence

The academy did not slow down.

If anything the tension grew sharper with each passing day. The unknown artisan was no longer a topic of curiosity or admiration. He had become a target of interest, speculation and quiet pursuit.

Students whispered.

Departments investigated.

The exchange monitored every transaction.

Somewhere within all of it Kael moved unnoticed.

For now.

That evening when Kael returned to his room something was different. It was subtle. Almost imperceptible.. His senses, sharpened by the fragments within him caught it immediately.

A faint disturbance in the air.

A controlled shift in Aether.

Not natural. Not accidental. Intentional.

He closed the door behind him. Remained still for a moment. Then his gaze moved toward the table beside his bed. There was nothing. At least, not visibly.

Kael stepped closer. Raised his hand slightly.. Touched the surface. The hidden formation dissolved instantly. Revealing a folded piece of paper.

"…So they've begun " he thought.

He picked it up. Opened it calmly.

"We know you exist. Your creations have value beyond the standard of this academy. We offer cooperation, discretion and opportunity. Respond if you are willing.. Ember Exchange"

Kael read it once. Then again. Not because he didn't understand it.. Because he was measuring it.

"They want control " he thought. "Or access."

The offer itself was not surprising. The exchange had everything to gain from someone like him. High-quality items meant profit, influence and reputation.. For Kael the question was different.

Risk. If he accepted he gained resources. If he refused he remained hidden.

"…Incomplete " he murmured.

Because there was a problem. His anonymity was fragile. Now he relied on distance and coincidence. That would not last.

If he wanted to continue he needed something. Something that would separate him completely.

That was when the idea formed.

"…A second identity is not enough " he thought. "I need a presence." Not just a name. A form.

The day Kael went to the market alone. The atmosphere was just as intense as before. This time his purpose was different. He ignored the crowds gathered near the exchange. Moved toward a quieter section of the market.

A place most students overlooked. Artifacts.

Unlike pills or formations artifacts were rare and unpredictable. They were not simply created. They were discovered, refined or inherited. Their functions varied their value uncertain.

Among them there were unique pieces.

Kael moved slowly between the stalls, his gaze calm as he examined each item. Most were ordinary. Some were overpriced. A few carried traces of potential.

Then he stopped. At a unremarkable stall near the edge of the district. The vendor was a man half-asleep barely paying attention to his surroundings.

"…Looking for something?" the man muttered lazily.

Kaels eyes were fixed on an object. A dark smooth band resting among discarded items.

It didn't glow. It didn't attract attention.. The fragments within him reacted.

"…This one " Kael said.

The vendor glanced at it. "That thing? Old storage piece. Probably defective."

Kael picked it up. The moment his fingers touched it the Aether within it shifted. Not outwardly.. Internally. It was hiding something.

"…What does it do?" Kael asked.

The vendor shrugged. "No idea. Doesn't respond to activation. Might be broken."

Kael observed it carefully.

"…Or restricted " he thought.

"How much?" he asked.

The vendor waved his hand dismissively. "Ten Aether Stones."

Kael placed the stones down without hesitation. The vendor blinked slightly surprised at how the deal was accepted.

"…Your loss " he muttered.

Kael said nothing. He left.

Back in the abandoned training room that night Kael placed the band on the table. The fragments stirred again. Stronger this time.

"…You recognize it " he said quietly.

He picked it up. Closed his eyes.. Let the Aether flow.

At first nothing happened. Then the surface of the band shifted. Subtly. Almost like it was responding.

Kael increased the flow slightly. More precise. More controlled.

The reaction deepened. The band activated.

A faint ripple passed through the air. Then Kaels reflection in the metal surface changed. His face Different. Not completely.. but enough.

Sharper features. Altered structure.

Even his presence felt… muted.

"…A transformation artifact " he realized.

Not appearance. Presence. Aether signature. Everything.

Kael opened his eyes.

"…This solves the problem."

He placed the band on his wrist. The change stabilized instantly.

Now even if someone stood in front of him they would not recognize him. Not truly.

A slow breath escaped him.

"…Now we proceed."

The day the exchange received a message. Anonymous. Simple.

"I accept. Conditions: anonymity, no tracking, controlled release.. Void Artisan"

The response came faster than expected.

"We accept your terms. Welcome, Void Artisan."

Arion stood in silence reviewing the formation scroll once more.

"…He's adapting " he said quietly.

Selene stood nearby.

"…So are we " she replied.

Back within the academy Kael walked through the crowd more. Unnoticed.

Now not the same.

Because somewhere within the shadows of the market a new figure would soon appear.

Not Kael.. but someone else.

Someone unknown. Someone who would create items that defied expectation.. Sell them for prices that would shake the academy.

The Hidden Artisan had taken a step.. This time no one would trace it back, to him. Not unless he allowed it.

The game had changed.. Kael was now playing it properly.
