Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Crossing the Grassland

He hadn't expected the Hunter to still be thinking about capturing them. Just how much of a grudge did he have to be this persistent?

"Let's wait and see if that guy leaves!"

Mono said to Six.

Six didn't refuse.

She crawled to the side and sat directly on the ground, hugging her knees and staring blankly, lost in thought.

Mono ignored her; it was already proven that the Six would occasionally act weird for no reason.

He just poked his head out from time to time, watching the Hunter patrolling with the lantern in the distance, hoping he would leave.

After waiting for a long time, Mono looked again. Seeing the Hunter still circling the same spot, he finally got angry.

"Motherf*cker, do I owe you money or something? Why are you blocking me? Damn it." He couldn't help but curse.

He had been waiting here for ages, and now it was almost dark.

He wanted to bypass the Hunter.

But unfortunately, the Hunter was blocking the perfect spot. Other directions in the forest were full of thorns and ravines; only the path where he stood allowed people of their size to pass through safely.

"Hey, idiot, don't just sit there in a daze, we have to go."

Turning to see Six sitting there as if nothing was wrong, Mono felt a surge of irritation.

What could he do when his teammate wasn't pulling their weight?

Six stood up, walked over, and took Mono's hand.

Mono gave her a strange look.

When did the Six become so proactive?

"There's a patch of grass over there; we can use it to cover our tracks. Beyond the grass, there's a hollow in a tree. As long as we hide inside before the hunter finds us, we'll be safe."

Little Six pointed at a shadow in the distance and said.

Mono turned his head, squinted his eyes, and looked into the distance.

Dammit, she can see that clearly from so far away?

How could he only see a black dot?

"Fine, I saw it long ago. Do you really need to tell me? So much nonsense."

Mono indicated he wasn't blind.

Little Six didn't argue, just watched Mono quietly.

The two of them held hands and walked into the grass.

The forest of weeds wasn't actually very tall, only about a dozen centimeters, so they had to hunch over and crawl forward slowly like rats.

Mono finally realized why Little Six had wanted to hold his hand just now.

Once lost in such thick grass, it would be extremely difficult to find each other again.

They walked like this, and the light in the distance gradually approached.

The hunter's oppressive figure appeared clearly before their eyes again.

The two were cautious, trying not to make a sound as they crawled to the very edge of the grass.

Further out, because it was near the tree trunk, there was no longer any cover from the weeds.

If they wanted to escape into the tree hollow, they would have to risk sneaking past right under the hunter's nose.

Mono picked up a stone from the ground.

The hunter was wrapped from head to toe in foul-smelling White Cloth; he guessed that the hunter's vision wasn't very good.

As long as he used the stone to distract him and avoided the glare of the searchlight, they should be able to pass through safely.

"When that guy shines the light to the other side, we'll take the chance to crawl over. Remember, be quiet when you move."

Mono whispered instructions to Little Six.

Little Six nodded: "Okay~"

She seemed very obedient.

Mono said no more. He loosened up his arm, gathered his strength, and threw the stone into the distance.

The stone traced a long arc through the air.

Mono was just about to run out when a mechanical sound suddenly rang out.

The hunter, who had been facing away from them, suddenly spun around. Without even looking, he held his gun with one hand and shot the stone—which was still flying and hadn't landed yet—right out of the air.

Seeing this, Mono quickly shrunk back.

He was truly terrified by the hunter's freakish speed and reaction time.

The speed of drawing the gun and the accuracy of the shot were too terrifying.

How did this guy lock onto the target?

The hunter ran to where the stone had been to investigate; Mono and Little Six quickly lay flat.

After checking and finding no prey, the hunter returned to his original position and continued his patrol.

Clearly, he was determined to block this pass no matter what.

Mono was now truly impatient to get the rifle from the Wooden Cabin at the easternmost end of the forest.

He really wanted to just take out this hunter with one shot.

He was truly detestable.

Although Little Six couldn't see Mono's face clearly, she could sense his feeling of helplessness.

Having remained silent all this time, she suddenly spoke:

"Do you really want to leave this place?"

Mono didn't understand: "Duh, otherwise am I supposed to stay here and wait to die?"

Little Six lowered her head again, thinking of who knows what.

Mono didn't plan on figuring out her thoughts; either way, it was never wrong to treat everyone here as a source of danger.

He looked around, and his eyes suddenly lit up slightly.

He suddenly pulled Little Six over.

"I have a way. Stay still~"

Little Six looked at Mono blankly, not knowing what idea he had now.
