Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Insidious and Persistent Hunter

Six had reacted by now, running behind Mono in the direction he was pulling her hand.

However, before she could say anything, Mono's surprised words came again.

"Hide behind those boxes over there, hurry!"

Mono thought of the scenes from the original game where one would dodge bullets.

As long as they hid behind the boxes, they could temporarily block one of the Hunter's shots.

Hearing this, Six's eyes brightened slightly, and she quickly picked up her pace.

Mono only felt a dark shadow flash past, followed by a surge of immense strength from his hand.

Six had directly overtaken him, taking the lead and running ahead.

"Hey, hey, hey~ Slow down~"

Mono called out hurriedly, but Six glanced back at the Hunter, who had raised his gun stock again, and did not stop.

"Ah~" Mono was left disheveled in the wind, dragged along by Six until they finally dove behind the boxes at the last second.

But before they could rest for long, another shell struck their position.

Boom!

With a loud blast, the wooden boxes concealing them were blown into splinters, scattering everywhere.

"Over there!"

Ignoring his aching hand, Mono started running again.

Not far away, there was another wooden box.

Six was not slow either, pulling Mono toward the box once more.

Mono wanted to cry but had no tears.

He was trying his best, but his speed still couldn't match Six's.

Of course, he would never admit he was useless.

If anyone was to blame, it was only because the serious Six was too strong.

Yes, it was all Six's fault.

Mono was dragged behind another wooden box again.

He was panting heavily, but Six's expression remained as calm as ever.

Comparing oneself to others really is infuriating.

In this manner, the two ran while dodging the Hunter's shots and pursuit.

Finally, they reached a piece of cover formed by the uneven terrain.

"Hide inside."

Mono felt like his lungs were about to explode.

His current sensation was roughly equivalent to finishing a marathon at a hundred-meter sprint pace.

Six didn't dare delay either, quickly pulling Mono into the corner.

Thump, thump, thump~

Heavy footsteps sounded above their heads.

Rustle, rustle~

A massive shadow, cast by the dim sunlight, was imprinted on the open ground before their eyes.

They could even see half of the Hunter's boot extending onto the cover they were hiding under; the distance was mere inches.

A pungent stench mixed with a nauseating bloody scent made Mono feel extremely unwell.

He had no choice but to shrink his body further back.

If the two of them were discovered by the Hunter in such a corner, escape would be impossible.

Mono was truly experiencing what it meant to have a close encounter.

This was absolutely terrible.

The Hunter's shadow looked left and right, and the hand holding the lantern kept turning, illuminating and inspecting the surroundings.

After a long while, seemingly convinced that Mono and the other had truly vanished, he finally moved his feet slowly.

The sound suddenly disappeared.

The Hunter seemed to have left.

Mono was about to speak, but Six quickly covered his mouth.

Mono looked at her in confusion.

She reached out a hand and made a shushing gesture.

Mono understood and nodded.

Six released her hand.

Mono looked at Six, who remained vigilant, and listened intently.

Upon listening, he felt a chill run down his spine.

A faint snoring sound was still coming from the grass above their heads.

"Holy crap, is this Hunter thing really this devious? He actually learned how to lie in wait?"

Mono was truly shocked, his back breaking out in a cold sweat.

In the game, the Hunter would head forward to search after failing to find them.

But now, he was actually camping there.

If he had made a sound just now, the consequences would have been unthinkable.

Mono once again assigned a higher danger rating to this world.

He had to be more cautious; he couldn't let his guard down just because he knew the game's plot.

After all, he was now inside it, so the game itself had become reality.

And in reality, any accident could happen at any time.

Finally, after the two had stayed quiet for another long while, the snoring sound came from above again.

The Hunter seemed to have finally given up.

Accompanied by the mechanical grinding and heavy footsteps, he gradually faded out of their hearing range.

"Let's go~" Six released her hold on Mono and walked forward.

"Hey, be careful, that Hunter is very insidious," Mono called out hurriedly upon seeing this.

Six glanced at him, said nothing, and continued walking on her own.

Mono quickly followed her.

Although he was a bit annoyed, he had to admit that if the Six hadn't shown her prowess just now, he might have been finished.

As expected, he still needed to make good use of her.

Mono plotted his little schemes.

The two walked forward cautiously. Before they had gone far, they saw a light coming through the trees again.

"This guy is like a ghost that won't leave."

Mono recognized who the person with the lantern was at a glance.

Who else could it be besides the Hunter?
