Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 17

The Hidden Long.

The night inside the shelter felt heavier than usual.

Not because of silence.

But because of what they now knew.

Adam sat against the wall, his injured arm wrapped tightly.

The bite mark was still there.

Still real.

Still dangerous.

But something strange was happening—

the pain wasn't getting worse.

It was… changing.

Across the room, Myra was inside the old portable terminal they salvaged from Professor Ilham's laboratory.

The screen flickered weakly.

Battery life: 18%.

Enough.

Just enough.

"I found something," she said quietly.

Everyone turned.

Farid stood immediately.

"What is it?"

Myra didn't answer right away.

She pressed a key.

Then another.

The screen changed.

ARCHIVED LOG FILE – ACCESS RESTRICTED

PROJECT: AKRA

STATUS: PARTIAL DELETION DETECTED

Silence filled the room.

Zul stepped closer.

"That wasn't in Ilham's public files."

Myra nodded.

"This is hidden."

She opened the first log entry.

A recorded voice file began playing.

Distorted.

Old.

But clear enough to understand.

"Subject Alpha shows resistance fluctuation."

"We are increasing exposure level."

"If successful, immune adaptation may be achieved within two cycles."

Raj frowned.

"Exposure?"

Lyana crossed her arms.

"That sounds like testing on humans."

Myra didn't respond.

She was already scrolling.

Another file opened.

"Military funding confirmed."

"All external communication must be terminated after Phase Two."

"Akra samples must not leave facility under any condition."

The room went silent again.

Farid's jaw tightened.

"So this wasn't just research."

Myra looked at him.

"No."

"It was controlled research."

Diana whispered,

"Controlled by who?"

Myra clicked another file.

This one took longer to load.

Then—

a new name appeared.

PROJECT OVERSIGHT:

UNIT BLACK VEIL

Zul narrowed his eyes.

"That's not a medical division."

Raj shook his head slowly.

"That's military classification."

Farid stepped closer.

"Read it."

Myra hesitated.

Then opened the log.

"Subject containment failure risk increasing."

"Recommend full evacuation of secondary staff."

"Primary samples transferred to undisclosed location."

Adam suddenly looked up.

"Transferred?"

Myra nodded.

"Yes."

"Before outbreak spread."

Another line appeared.

"Akra compound exhibits unpredictable mutation response when combined with botanical catalyst."

"Fingerroot increases reaction instability by 47%."

Myra froze slightly.

"47%…"

She looked at the sealed container on the table.

The Akra leaves.

The Fingerroot.

Now suddenly—

they didn't feel like medicine anymore.

They felt like risk.

Farid exhaled slowly.

"So Professor Ilham knew this?"

Myra nodded.

"He knew everything."

Silence followed.

Longer this time.

Heavier.

Then Adam spoke quietly.

"If they already tested it before…"

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

"…why did it still fail?"

No one answered immediately.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

Or comforting.

Myra closed the log file.

But another file opened automatically.

As if the system wanted them to see it.

FINAL ENTRY DETECTED

DATE: REDACTED

A new voice played.

Slower.

Weaker.

More human.

"If this reaches recovery team…"

"…Akra is not a cure attempt."

"…it is a threshold."

"…we are not creating resistance."

"…we are forcing evolution."

Zul stepped back slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Myra whispered,

"It means… they weren't trying to save humanity."

She didn't finish the sentence.

Because the next line appeared.

"Subject selection criteria: adaptive physiology required."

"Candidate must survive initial exposure."

Farid turned slowly toward Adam.

The room followed his gaze.

One by one.

Adam didn't move.

But something in his expression changed.

Subtle.

Uncertain.

Like something inside him had just connected.

Myra's voice dropped.

"Adaptive physiology…"

She looked at Adam.

"…you survived longer than normal infection response."

Silence.

Heavy silence.

Outside the shelter—

wind moved again.

But this time—

it didn't feel empty.

Something was watching.

Something was waiting.

Something was coming closer.

And inside Adam's mind—

another memory flickered.

This time clearer.

A laboratory table.

A needle.

And voices saying:

"He is compatible."

Adam closed his eyes slowly.

And when he opened them again—

he wasn't sure anymore

if he was still human.
