Chapter 18: The Fever Begins
The night did not feel normal anymore.
Something had changed inside the shelter.
Not outside.
Inside.
Adam sat quietly near the wall.
His breathing was steady.
Too steady.
Almost controlled.
But his body—
was not listening anymore.
Myra noticed it first.
She had been watching him since the log files.
Since the word appeared:
adaptive physiology
She didn't like what that implied.
Not even a little.
"Adam," she called softly.
He turned.
"Yes?"
She stepped closer.
"How do you feel?"
Adam paused.
Then answered honestly.
"Normal."
But his fingers twitched slightly.
Just once.
Farid noticed immediately.
Farid moved closer.
"That's not convincing."
Adam gave a small smile.
"It's the truth."
But sweat had already started forming on his forehead.
Diana stood up from the corner.
"Your temperature?"
Myra checked quickly.
Her expression changed instantly.
"…it's rising."
Silence.
Zul stepped back.
"How fast?"
Myra checked again.
"Too fast."
Adam exhaled slowly.
"It's probably nothing."
But his voice wasn't as stable anymore.
Raj frowned.
"It's not nothing."
Lyana nodded.
"Infected bites don't behave like this."
Myra grabbed the medical scanner.
Placed it near Adam's arm wound.
The device beeped.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
ERROR
She froze.
"…that's impossible."
Farid looked at her sharply.
"What?"
Myra tried again.
Same result.
"The scanner can't read the infection pattern."
Diana whispered,
"What does that mean?"
Myra answered slowly.
"It means… it's not following normal infection progression."
Adam looked down at his arm.
The bite mark had changed.
Not worse.
Not infected.
But darker.
Like something inside it was rewriting itself.
"I told you," Adam said quietly.
"I feel normal."
He paused.
Then added:
"But also… not."
Farid stepped closer.
"Explain."
Adam struggled to find words.
"It feels like…"
He stopped.
Searching.
"…something is working inside me."
Myra's expression tightened.
"Accelerated reaction."
Zul shook his head.
"That's what the log said."
Raj added quietly.
"Adaptive physiology."
Silence again.
Then suddenly—
Adam's vision blurred.
Just for a second.
He grabbed the table for support.
"Adam!" Diana moved forward.
"I'm fine," he said quickly.
But his breathing had changed.
Faster now.
Uncontrolled.
Myra checked his pulse again.
Her hands were shaking slightly now.
"It's escalating."
Farid looked at her.
"Define escalating."
Myra swallowed.
"His body is reacting to something."
She paused.
"…and we don't know what it is."
Adam closed his eyes.
Another flash.
Stronger this time.
Not memory.
Something deeper.
A lab.
Bright lights.
A voice saying:
"Subject shows compatibility beyond expectation."
He opened his eyes again.
And this time—
he didn't look the same.
Farid noticed.
"Adam?"
Adam looked at him slowly.
"Yes?"
But the way he answered—
was different.
Too calm.
Too focused.
Too distant.
Myra stepped back slightly.
"…this is not normal infection."
Zul whispered,
"Then what is it?"
Myra didn't answer immediately.
Because she already knew the answer was dangerous.
"It's transformation," she said finally.
Outside—
wind hit the broken window frame.
Hard.
Like something outside was responding.
Inside—
Adam lifted his head slightly.
And for a moment—
his eyes didn't look like someone who was infected.
Or cured.
Or human.
They looked like something in between. 🧬⚠️
