Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Mirror’s Edge

The rain had finally ceased, leaving the streets of Accra glistening like obsidian under the city's amber streetlights. Tobi sat in the back of the SUV, but he wasn't looking at the road. He was staring at the small, black radio he had snatched from Captain Thorne before throwing the decoy into the water.

He hadn't actually thrown the real radio away. That was a sleight of hand a trick for the cameras he knew were watching.

"Tobi, you've been silent for ten miles," Ama said, her voice filled with a mixture of concern and exhaustion. "We cleared the port. The ships are docking. My father is already calling the press to announce the 'miraculous' clearing of the fuel spill. This is a victory. Why do you look like you just lost?"

"Because the blockade wasn't the attack," Tobi said, his eyes never leaving the tablet. "It was a test. Thorne didn't care about the ships. He was waiting for me to use a System skill."

Ama frowned. "A what? You mean the 'app'?"

Tobi didn't answer. He couldn't. The "System" was a secret he carried alone, a burden that felt heavier with every level he gained. If there was another user out there someone who knew what the 'Neural Jammer' was then the rules of the game had just changed. He wasn't the only predator in the jungle anymore.

[Target Signal: Stationary Location: The SkyBar at Villaggio Alto.]

"Driver, change of plans," Tobi commanded. "Take us to the Villaggio towers. Now."

"The Villaggio? Tobi, that's the most exclusive residential area in the city," Ama said. "If the Chairman is there, he's protected by more than just mercenaries. He's protected by the elite."

"I don't care if he's protected by the heavens," Tobi growled. "He looked into my window. I'm going to look into his."

[System Skill: 'Digital Sovereign' Passive Active.]

[Detection: 1 External Ping Blocked.]

Tobi's heart hammered against his ribs. Another ping. Someone was trying to access his location in real-time. But it wasn't a standard hack. It felt... familiar. Like a mirror reflecting his own power back at him.

The SUV pulled up to the base of the iconic red-and-white striped towers of Villaggio. Tobi stepped out, ignoring the valet. He headed straight for the elevator that led to the rooftop bar.

"Stay in the car, Ama," Tobi said, his voice leaving no room for argument. "If I'm not back in twenty minutes, call your father and tell him to liquidate every Apex asset in Ghana. Don't ask why. Just do it."

Before she could protest, the elevator doors hissed shut.

The SkyBar was a playground for the ultra-rich. The air smelled of expensive cigars and aged cognac. A jazz quartet played softly in the corner, their music competing with the wind that whipped around the high-altitude lounge. Tobi scanned the room, his 'Shadow Ledger' pulsing in his mind.

[Target Found: North Balcony.]

[Threat Level: UNKNOWN.]

A man sat alone at a corner table, a glass of sparkling water in front of him. He was wearing a tailored grey suit that cost more than a small house in Ibadan. He didn't look like a villain. He looked like a philosophy professor.

Tobi walked over and sat down across from him without being invited.

"The 'Neural Jammer' was a bit loud, don't you think?" the man said, his voice smooth and devoid of any accent. He didn't look up from his tablet. "Effective, certainly. But lacking the finesse of a Level 20 user."

Tobi felt a chill that had nothing to do with the wind. "Who are you? And why are you tracking my System?"

The man finally looked up. His eyes were a piercing, artificial grey. "My name is Silas. And I'm not tracking 'the' System, Tobi. I'm tracking my investment. You see, the Great Library doesn't just give out these 'interfaces' for fun. It's a tournament. And you've just entered the second round."

[Warning: Silas is attempting a 'Data Sync'.]

[Defense Protocol: 'Imperial Decree' Auto-Engaged.]

"The Chairman?" Tobi asked, his hands tightening on the table.

"The Chairman is a puppet," Silas laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "A man I hired to see if you had the spine to defend your territory. Most 'Users' fail in the first month. They get greedy. They buy sports cars and spend their points on fame. But you... you bought a logistics company. You focused on infrastructure. That shows vision."

Silas leaned forward, his grey eyes locking onto Tobi's. "But vision isn't enough when you're playing against people who have been Level 50 for a decade. The Vulture Syndicate? Okon? They were children's toys. The real game is about the digital currency of nations. And right now, you're in my way."

[New Quest: 'The Sovereign's Choice'.]

[Option 1: Submit. Join Silas's 'Consortium'. (Reward: Instant Level 30; +₦10 Billion).]

[Option 2: Resit. Maintain Independence. (Penalty: Immediate Global System Bounty placed on Host).]

Tobi looked at the screen floating in his mind. The offer was staggering. Level 30 meant he could control the entire Nigerian banking system with a thought. 10 Billion Naira meant Apex would be the largest company in Africa overnight.

But he looked at Silas the cold, empty eyes of a man who had sold his soul to the machine and he knew the price.

"I didn't start Apex to be a branch of someone else's tree," Tobi said, his voice steady. "I'm the Root. And I don't submit."

Tobi stood up, his 'Imperial Decree' flaring, creating a visible ripple in the air around the table. Glassware nearby cracked.

Silas didn't flinch. He simply sighed. "A pity. You were the most promising candidate in years. I suppose I'll have to see you on the battlefield."

Silas tapped his tablet.

[System Notification: Option 2 Selected.]

[Bounty Active!]

[Status: 'Enemy of the Consortium' Unlocked.]

"Get out of here, Tobi," Silas said, looking back at his screen. "Enjoy the next twenty-four hours. They'll be the last ones where you can walk the streets without looking over your shoulder."

Tobi didn't wait. He turned and headed for the elevator. His mind was racing. He had 2.1k viewers, 7 collections, and now, the entire world of hidden System Users was hunting him.

As the elevator descended, Tobi pulled out his phone. He didn't call the police. He didn't call Ama.

He opened the System Store and scrolled to the bottom. To the 'Forbidden' tab.

"You want a war, Silas?" Tobi whispered. "I'll give you a revolution."

[End of Chapter 17]

THE TWIST IS OUT! Tobi isn't alone. Silas is Level 50, and he just placed a global bounty on Tobi's head! 😱 Can our Level 15 Mogul survive against an enemy who knows all his tricks?
