Jean looked worn out- like something had drained the life out of him.
"Can I come in, please?" he said, his voice low and hoarse.
Shawn couldn't speak, nor could he move to let him in. Panic gripped him sharp and sudden. He couldn't even remember the last time he'd felt like this.
There was someone else inside the apartment, and if Jean saw him, he would definitely misunderstand everything, thinking Shawn didn't really want him, that he was already seeing other people. He might leave for good this time.
And if he refused to let him in, Jean would still think the same thing, that Shawn didn't want him. Shawn didn't want him to leave when he was clearly overwhelmed. But still, he couldn't do or say anything. He stood there torn.
"It wasn't me in that picture," Jean added more quietly. "I know you don't care, and it's not like I'm trying to force you to… I just wanted you to know, for my own peace."
