Chapter 8 - chapter 8: thé beast in the dark

The eyes didn't blink.

They just stayed there. Watching.

A low growl rolled through the chamber again, deeper this time. It wasn't just a sound—it vibrated in the chest, like the air itself was reacting to whatever stood in the darkness.

No one moved.

For a second… maybe two.

Then Rin stepped forward.

"…Yeah, okay. I'm done waiting."

"Rin—" Lira started.

Too late.

He charged.

The moment his foot hit the ground, the creature moved.

Fast.

Way too fast for something that big.

A massive shape burst out of the darkness, claws scraping against stone as it lunged forward. Rin barely had time to block before the impact sent him sliding back across the floor.

"—that's not normal!" he growled, digging his heels in.

Now they could see it clearly.

The creature was huge. Easily twice Rin's size, maybe more. Its body looked like it was made of solid shadow, but not completely—parts of it flickered, like something underneath was trying to break through. Its eyes burned faintly, not red… not yellow… something in between.

Unstable.

Taro reacted first.

An arrow flew.

It hit.

Or at least—it should have.

The arrow passed through part of the creature's body, like hitting smoke, but then struck something solid a split second later. The beast flinched slightly.

"…There's a core," Taro said calmly. "It's not fully physical."

"Great," Rin muttered. "That makes it worse."

Kael stepped forward.

The sword in his hand reacted immediately—stronger than before. Not just a pulse. This time, it felt like resistance.

Like it didn't like what it was sensing.

"…This thing isn't just from the island," Kael said.

Faye narrowed her eyes. "No. It's corrupted."

That word hung in the air.

Corrupted.

The creature let out another growl—louder now—and slammed one of its claws into the ground. The impact cracked the stone beneath them.

Lira stepped back. "Okay, yeah, we can confirm—it's definitely hostile."

"No kidding," Rin shot back.

The beast lunged again.

This time—

They were ready.

Kael moved first, stepping in and meeting the attack head-on. Their clash sent a shockwave through the chamber. The moment his blade made contact, he felt it.

Resistance.

But also… something else.

Something inside the creature.

Struggling.

He jumped back.

"…Wait."

"Not now!" Rin snapped, dodging another swipe.

"No—listen," Kael said quickly. "There's something inside it."

Taro didn't hesitate. "Then we aim for it."

Another arrow flew—this time more precise. It struck deeper, and the creature reacted more violently.

It roared.

Not just in anger.

In pain.

Faye's expression shifted slightly. "…He's right."

"He?" Lira repeated.

Faye nodded once. "There's something human in there."

That changed everything.

Kael stepped forward again, slower this time.

"Hey!" he shouted toward the creature. "If you can hear me—fight it!"

Rin blinked. "…You're talking to it now?"

"Just trust me!"

The creature paused.

Just for a second.

Its movements slowed.

Then—its body twitched violently.

Like two forces were pulling in opposite directions.

Kael saw it clearly now.

There was something inside.

Something trapped.

The sword reacted again—this time differently.

Not rejecting.

Not resisting.

Guiding.

"…I get it," Kael muttered.

He stepped forward, ignoring Rin's protest.

"Kael, don't—"

Too late.

Kael rushed in.

The creature swung—

He dodged.

Barely.

Its claw grazed his shoulder, tearing fabric but not flesh.

Close.

Too close.

But he didn't stop.

He moved straight toward its center.

Toward where the energy felt strongest.

The sword vibrated intensely.

"Hold it down!" Kael shouted.

Rin didn't hesitate.

"Finally!"

He charged again, this time grabbing onto one of the creature's limbs and forcing it off balance. The ground cracked beneath them as he pushed with everything he had.

Taro fired two arrows in quick succession—pinning the creature's movement just enough.

Lira triggered one of her tools, releasing a burst of light that disrupted the shadows around its body.

Faye moved in silently, striking precise points to destabilize its form.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

The creature stopped.

That was enough.

Kael jumped.

Straight toward its core.

The sword connected.

Not with force.

But with intent.

The moment the blade touched, everything froze.

Sound disappeared.

Movement stopped.

And Kael felt it.

A presence.

Not the creature.

Something inside it.

Weak.

Fading.

"…You're still there," Kael said quietly.

No response.

Just… a faint feeling.

Fear.

Pain.

And exhaustion.

Kael tightened his grip.

"Then don't give up now."

The sword pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

Light.

Not bright.

Not blinding.

Just enough.

The shadows around the creature began to break apart. Slowly at first… then faster.

The massive body collapsed inward, dissolving into fragments of dark energy that faded into the air.

And in the center—

Someone fell.

Rin caught him before he hit the ground.

"…Got him."

Everyone gathered around.

The figure was human.

Barely conscious.

Breathing—but weak.

Lira knelt beside him. "He's alive."

Faye studied him carefully. "…He's been exposed to the Shadow Blades' energy for too long."

Taro added quietly, "Corruption."

Kael looked down at the sword.

It had gone quiet again.

But this time… it felt different.

Not heavier.

Not darker.

Just… clearer.

"…So that's what happens," he murmured.

No one answered.

Because they all understood.

Power like this…

Came with a cost.

A real one.

The man on the ground stirred slightly.

His eyes opened—just barely.

"…You…" he whispered weakly.

Kael leaned closer. "Easy. You're safe."

The man shook his head faintly.

"…No… you don't understand…"

His hand grabbed Kael's sleeve weakly.

"They're… coming…"

Kael's expression hardened.

"Who?"

The man's voice dropped to almost nothing.

"…the others… who failed…"

Silence.

Heavy.

Cold.

Then—

The chamber trembled again.

Stronger this time.

Much stronger.

Rin looked up. "…Don't tell me there's more."

Faye didn't look surprised.

"…There's always more."

From the darkness ahead—

Multiple shadows began to move.

Not one.

Not two.

Many.

Kael stood up slowly, tightening his grip on the sword.

"…Alright," he said quietly.

"This is about to get serious."

To be continued… 🔥
