Chapter 7 - chapter 7: Echoes beneath the surface.

They didn't move right away.

After Veyron disappeared, no one spoke for a few seconds. Not because they didn't have anything to say… but because they were all thinking the same thing.

That guy wasn't normal.

Rin finally broke the silence. "Alright… I don't know about you guys, but I didn't like that at all."

"No one did," Lira replied, still staring at the spot where Veyron had been standing. "He wasn't trying to scare us. That's the problem."

Kael didn't answer.

He was still looking down at his sword.

It had gone quiet again, but not completely. There was still something there—like a faint echo, or a memory that hadn't settled yet.

Faye noticed. "It reacted to him."

Kael nodded slightly. "Yeah… not like before. It wasn't just warning me. It was… recognizing him."

Taro frowned. "So he's connected to the Shadow Blades."

"More than that," Kael said. "He understands them."

Rin crossed his arms. "And apparently, we don't."

That stung a little.

Not because it was harsh—but because it was true.

Kael exhaled slowly, then looked around the chamber again.

"Doesn't change anything," he said. "We're still moving forward."

Lira raised an eyebrow. "Even after that?"

"Especially after that."

That was enough.

No one argued.

They moved again.

---

The deeper they went, the more the chamber changed.

At first, it had just been walls and carvings. Old, silent, heavy with history.

Now… it was different.

The space widened. The ceiling rose higher, almost disappearing into darkness. And the carvings—

They weren't just carvings anymore.

They moved.

Not in an obvious way. If you stared too hard, they looked still. But the moment you looked away, you could swear they shifted slightly.

Like they didn't want to be understood.

Lira slowed down, studying one section more carefully. "These aren't random scenes…"

"What do you see?" Kael asked.

She hesitated.

"…Fights. But not like the ones we've seen."

Rin stepped closer. "How different?"

Lira pointed at one of the carvings. "Look. These people… they're not just using weapons. The shadows themselves are part of the fight."

Kael stepped closer.

She was right.

The figures weren't just holding blades—the darkness around them was reacting, shaping itself, almost like it was alive.

"…So this is what they meant," Kael murmured.

"The Shadow Blades aren't just weapons," Faye added quietly. "They're… something else."

Taro's grip tightened on his bow. "Something dangerous."

Kael didn't disagree.

---

They reached a narrow passage a few minutes later.

It didn't look like much—just a break in the wall, barely wide enough for one person at a time. But the moment Kael stepped closer, the sword reacted again.

Stronger this time.

"Wait," he said.

Everyone stopped.

Rin frowned. "What now?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

He stepped forward slowly, placing one hand against the wall beside the passage. The stone felt cold… but not empty.

There was something behind it.

Not physically.

Something else.

"…This isn't just a path," he said. "It's another test."

Lira sighed. "Of course it is."

"Feels different though," Faye added. "More… direct."

Kael nodded. "Yeah."

He took a breath.

Then stepped inside.

---

The moment he crossed the threshold—everything disappeared.

No chamber.

No walls.

No crew.

Just… darkness.

Complete darkness.

Kael didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He waited.

A few seconds passed.

Then—

A sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Steady.

Coming from somewhere ahead.

Kael narrowed his eyes. "I know this isn't real."

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice answered.

"…Does that make it easier?"

Kael froze.

He knew that voice.

Too well.

"…No," he said quietly.

From the darkness, a figure stepped forward.

Not Veyron.

Not a shadow creature.

Someone else.

Someone from before.

Someone he hadn't expected to see again.

"…You're not supposed to be here," Kael muttered.

The figure smiled faintly.

"That's what you think."

Kael's grip tightened.

"This is the island. Another illusion."

"Maybe," the figure replied. "Or maybe this is just something you've been avoiding."

That hit deeper than it should have.

Kael looked away for a second.

That was enough.

The figure stepped closer.

"You keep moving forward," it said. "But you never stop to ask yourself why."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"I already know why."

"Do you?"

Silence.

"…Yeah."

"Then say it."

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Because suddenly—

It didn't feel that simple anymore.

The sword in his hand pulsed again.

Not aggressively.

Not violently.

Just… steady.

Like it was waiting.

Kael looked down at it.

Then back up.

"I'm not doing this for power," he said.

The figure didn't react.

"I'm not here to control anything," Kael continued. "I'm here because I chose this path. And I'm not turning back now."

A long pause followed.

Then—

The figure smiled again.

"…Good."

And just like that—

It vanished.

The darkness cracked.

Light returned.

---

Kael stumbled slightly as the chamber came back into view.

Rin grabbed his shoulder. "Hey—what happened?"

Kael blinked a few times. "…Test."

Lira looked relieved. "Same here."

Taro nodded. "Yeah."

Faye didn't say anything.

But her expression said enough.

They had all seen something.

Something personal.

Something real.

Kael straightened up.

"…We passed."

Rin let out a breath. "Good. Because I'm getting tired of this place messing with my head."

Lira gave a small smile. "Too late for that."

Kael almost smiled too.

Almost.

---

Then the ground shifted again.

But this time—

It wasn't subtle.

A deep rumble echoed through the chamber. The walls trembled, dust falling from above.

Taro reacted instantly. "This isn't a test."

Faye's eyes narrowed. "No… it's something else."

Kael looked ahead.

The passage beyond them had opened into a much larger space.

And from the darkness—

Something moved.

Heavy.

Slow.

But powerful.

The sound of it alone made the air feel tighter.

Rin stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "…Finally. Something real."

Kael didn't take his eyes off the shadows.

"…Don't rush."

Because whatever was coming—

Wasn't like the others.

Not even close.

A low growl echoed through the chamber.

Not loud.

But deep enough to shake the ground slightly.

Then two glowing eyes appeared in the dark.

Watching them.

Waiting.

Kael's grip tightened on the sword.

"…Now this," he muttered, "is going to be a problem."

To be continued… 🔥
