Kael didn't like the feeling.
Not at all.
It wasn't fear. Not exactly. He had already faced danger before—real danger. But this… this was different.
This felt like being watched by something that didn't need eyes to see him.
The chamber had gone quiet after they left the pedestal behind. Too quiet. Even their footsteps seemed to fade faster than they should, swallowed by the darkness stretching along the walls.
Behind him, Rin cracked his neck slightly. "Alright… I'm not imagining it, right? Something's definitely following us."
"You're not imagining it," Faye said calmly.
That didn't help.
Lira tightened her grip on her bag. "Kael… the markings on the walls—they changed."
That made him stop.
"Changed how?"
"They weren't like this before," she said, pointing at the nearest carving. "Look closely."
Kael stepped closer. At first, it looked like the same ancient patterns they'd seen earlier. But then he noticed it—the shapes weren't fixed. They were… shifting. Slowly, almost imperceptibly.
Like shadows pretending to be stone.
Taro didn't say anything, but the sound of his arrow being drawn was enough.
"Something's wrong," Kael said quietly.
The sword in his hand pulsed once.
Then again.
Stronger this time.
And then—
A sound.
Not loud. Not clear.
Just… a breath.
Right behind them.
Everyone turned at the same time.
Nothing.
Just darkness.
Rin stepped forward, fists ready. "Alright, I'm done with this hiding nonsense. Show yourself!"
Silence.
Then—
A voice.
Low. Calm. Too calm.
"You've come further than most."
It didn't echo like the others.
It felt close.
Too close.
From the shadows ahead, something moved. Not quickly. Not aggressively. Just… stepped forward.
A figure. Tall. Cloaked in something darker than the shadows themselves.
Kael felt his grip tighten around the sword instantly.
This wasn't like the others.
This wasn't a test.
This was something else entirely.
"You're not part of the island," Kael said, his voice steady.
The figure tilted its head slightly.
"No," it replied. "But I belong here… more than you do."
Rin stepped up beside Kael. "Yeah? Then why don't you try and stop us properly instead of talking?"
The figure didn't react.
Didn't move.
Didn't even seem offended.
"I already am."
Before anyone could react, the ground beneath them shifted.
Not violently.
But enough.
Enough to break balance.
Enough to remind them—they weren't in control here.
Lira stumbled slightly, catching herself. "This isn't normal… it's like the whole chamber is responding to him."
"Because it is," Faye said quietly.
Kael's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"
The figure took another step forward.
For a brief second, the faint light in the chamber caught part of his face.
Not fully.
Just enough.
Pale skin.
Sharp features.
And eyes—
Dark… but not empty.
Focused.
Controlled.
"My name…"
A pause.
Almost deliberate.
"…is Veyron."
The name meant nothing to Kael.
But the sword in his hand reacted instantly.
A sharp pulse.
Stronger than before.
Almost like recognition.
That was enough.
Kael raised the blade slightly. "You know about these swords."
Veyron's gaze dropped briefly to the weapon.
"I know what they are," he said.
"And I know what they do to people who think they can control them."
Rin scoffed. "We're doing just fine."
"Are you?"
That simple question hit harder than it should have.
Kael didn't respond immediately.
Because part of him… hesitated.
Veyron noticed.
Of course he did.
"They don't just give power," he continued. "They take. Slowly. Quietly. Until you don't even realize what you've lost."
Lira frowned. "Then why are you here?"
That made him pause.
Just for a second.
"Because I made the same mistake once."
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Real.
Taro finally spoke. "Then you're not here to stop us."
"No," Veyron said.
His gaze shifted back to Kael.
"I'm here to see if you're worth stopping."
And then—he moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
Kael barely had time to react. Their blades met instantly, a sharp clash echoing through the chamber.
The impact wasn't just physical.
It pushed back.
Like something deeper was colliding.
Kael slid back slightly, boots scraping against the stone.
Strong.
This guy was strong.
Rin charged in immediately. "Don't fight him alone!"
His punch connected—
Or should have.
Veyron shifted just enough for the attack to miss, his movement clean, effortless. He countered with a single strike that forced Rin back several steps.
Not overpowering.
Just precise.
Too precise.
"This isn't like the creatures outside," Lira said under her breath.
"No," Faye replied. "This is someone who knows exactly what he's doing."
Kael rushed forward again, faster this time.
Their blades clashed once more.
Then again.
Each strike sharper than the last.
Kael adjusted his rhythm, letting the sword guide him slightly—but not fully. He remembered the warning.
Control the darkness.
Don't let it control you.
Veyron noticed the shift immediately.
"…Good," he murmured.
Kael didn't like that.
"Good?"
"You're learning," Veyron said calmly. "Most people don't get that far."
That was all Kael needed to hear.
He pushed harder.
Faster.
Stronger.
The shadows around them reacted, swirling slightly with each clash.
For a moment—just a moment—it felt like Kael had the advantage.
Until Veyron stopped holding back.
Everything changed instantly.
His movements became sharper.
Cleaner.
And heavier.
Kael blocked—but the force pushed him back harder this time.
Too fast.
Too strong.
This wasn't just skill.
This was experience.
Real experience.
The kind you only get from surviving things you probably shouldn't have.
Kael steadied himself, breathing slightly heavier now.
"…You're not trying to kill us," he said.
Veyron didn't deny it.
"No."
"Why?"
A pause.
Then—
"Because if I wanted to… you'd already be dead."
Silence.
No arrogance in his voice.
Just fact.
And that… made it worse.
Kael exhaled slowly.
Then smiled slightly.
"…Good."
Rin blinked. "Good??"
Kael adjusted his grip on the sword.
"Because that means we still have time to get stronger."
For the first time—
Veyron reacted.
Not much.
Just a slight shift in his expression.
Almost… interest.
Kael stepped forward again.
"Next time we fight," he said, "I won't be the one getting pushed back."
A long silence followed.
Then Veyron turned away.
"…We'll see."
Just like that.
The pressure in the chamber faded.
The shadows settled.
And he was gone.
No dramatic exit.
No explosion.
Just… gone.
Rin looked around. "Did he seriously just leave?"
Taro lowered his bow slightly. "Yeah… he did."
Lira exhaled slowly. "That guy… he's dangerous."
Faye nodded. "And he knows more about the Shadow Blades than he said."
Kael looked down at his sword.
It had calmed.
But not completely.
"…He's coming back," Kael said quietly.
No one argued with that.
Because deep down—
They all felt it too.
And this time…
It wouldn't be a test.
