Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – The Midnight Intrusion

The school was never truly silent… but tonight, it felt different.

The wind howled faintly through the towers, and the glowing runes along the walls flickered as if something unseen was interfering with them.

David woke suddenly.

His chest was tight. The spark inside him pulsed sharply, not calm like before—but urgent.

Something is wrong.

He sat up, listening. At first, nothing. Then—

A distant echo.

Not footsteps. Not voices.

Something… moving.

David stepped into the corridor, careful, alert. The usual faint glow of the hallways had dimmed, shadows stretching unnaturally across the walls.

Then he saw her.

Pearl.

She stood at the end of the corridor, already awake, already focused. A small group of birds hovered near the ceiling above her, restless.

"You felt it too," she said quietly.

David nodded. "Yeah. This isn't normal."

Pearl's eyes narrowed. "The animals are uneasy. Something is inside the school."

That was all they needed.

They moved together.

As they advanced deeper into the school, the environment began to shift. Doors creaked open by themselves. Objects trembled slightly, reacting to Pearl's growing focus.

David reached out with his mind, activating his Knowledge Synthesis. The flow of energy in the school felt… disrupted.

Then it appeared.

A shadow figure, darker than anything they had seen before, slipped across the wall and into the center of the hallway. Its form flickered, unstable, like it was phasing in and out of reality.

Pearl reacted instantly.

Nearby chairs and metal fixtures lifted into the air, forming a defensive barrier. At the same time, the birds darted forward, circling the entity to track its movement.

David stepped forward. "It's not just an intruder… it's different."

The shadow lunged.

Everything happened at once.

Pearl redirected a metal beam toward the creature. The shadow phased through it. David adjusted instantly, predicting its movement and redirecting its path using surrounding energy.

The creature struck again, faster this time.

Pearl's eyes sharpened. She slammed her hand forward, sending multiple objects crashing toward it from different angles.

David followed up, aligning the timing perfectly—forcing the shadow into a narrow space where it couldn't fully phase.

For a moment… it worked.

The creature flickered violently, its form destabilizing.

"Now!" Pearl shouted.

David didn't hesitate.

He pulled together everything around him: structure, motion, timing, flow.

Pearl locked the space physically.

David locked it mentally.

For the first time, their powers didn't just work together… they merged.

The shadow let out a distorted screech before collapsing inward, dissolving into nothing.

Silence returned.

Both of them stood still, breathing heavily.

"That was… new," David said.

Pearl nodded slowly. "Stronger than the others. Smarter too."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Pearl looked at him, a small, genuine smile appearing.

"You're getting better," she said.

David smirked slightly. "You're not so unpredictable anymore."

She rolled her eyes. "Don't get used to it."

But she didn't walk away.

A sudden presence filled the corridor.

The headmaster appeared, his expression serious.

"You encountered it," he said.

David frowned. "What was that?"

The headmaster's gaze darkened slightly.

"A fragment. Something that should not yet exist within these walls."

Pearl crossed her arms. "So this isn't over."

"No," the headmaster replied. "It is only beginning."

David felt the spark inside him pulse again—stronger than before.

Not just power.

Not just survival.

Something bigger was coming.

And this time…

he wouldn't face it alone.
