Chapter 110 - The Eyes Beneath the Mountain

Scene 110 — "Something Was Already Awake"

The mountain remained silent.

The opening beneath the grave waited.

Dark.

Ancient.

Patient.

The Traveler stood at its edge.

The pendant rested within his hand.

Cold enough to feel unnatural.

Below him stretched only darkness.

No visible floor.

No visible walls.

Only a narrow passage descending into the mountain itself.

The sea of flowers swayed softly above.

Moonlight illuminated the entrance.

Yet the light refused to travel far.

Only a few steps below the surface—

everything vanished into blackness.

The Traveler stepped forward.

Then descended.

Stone greeted his boots.

Ancient stone.

Worn smooth by an impossible amount of time.

The passage sloped downward.

Quietly.

Gradually.

The flowers above became distant.

The mountain disappeared behind him.

The darkness deepened.

The air grew colder.

Not unpleasant.

Not hostile.

Merely old.

The Traveler continued downward.

One step.

Then another.

The pendant remained silent.

The tunnel remained silent.

Even his footsteps seemed strangely muted.

As though the mountain preferred quiet.

Minutes passed.

Perhaps longer.

Time felt uncertain here.

Then—

the passage ended.

The Traveler stepped into a vast chamber.

His gaze lifted.

Darkness filled the cavern.

A ceiling existed somewhere far above.

Lost beyond sight.

Ancient pillars rose from the floor.

Weathered.

Broken.

Half-swallowed by shadows.

The chamber felt less like a tomb.

More like a forgotten hall.

A place built for a purpose long abandoned.

The Traveler stood motionless.

Listening.

Nothing.

No breathing.

No movement.

No sound.

Then—

he saw them.

Two green eyes.

Watching.

Far across the chamber.

Suspended within darkness.

The Traveler became still.

The eyes did not blink.

Did not move.

Did not approach.

They simply remained there.

Patient.

Observing.

Moonlight could not reach them.

The darkness concealed everything else.

Only the eyes remained visible.

Bright green.

Unnaturally clear.

The Traveler studied them.

No hostility.

No fear.

No urgency.

Only observation.

The eyes returned the favor.

Neither moved.

The silence stretched.

Heavy.

Ancient.

Then—

a woman's voice drifted through the chamber.

Soft.

Calm.

Amused.

Not from the eyes.

From somewhere else.

Somewhere behind him.

"...You took longer than usual."

The Traveler turned instantly.

Nothing stood there.

Only darkness.

Only pillars.

Only silence.

The voice laughed quietly.

A gentle sound.

Yet it carried a strange familiarity.

As though continuing a conversation interrupted centuries ago.

The Traveler's gaze moved through the shadows.

Searching.

Finding nothing.

The voice continued.

"...I suppose I should be grateful."

Silence followed.

Then—

"...Most versions never reach this place."

The chamber became still.

The green eyes remained motionless in the distance.

Watching.

Listening.

The Traveler faced the darkness.

"...Who are you?"

The laughter faded.

The woman's voice remained.

Softer now.

Almost thoughtful.

"...I was wondering when you would ask that."

A long pause.

Ancient.

Patient.

Then—

the green eyes narrowed slightly.

The first movement since his arrival.

The Traveler noticed.

The voice noticed.

Something in the chamber shifted.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

As though attention itself had changed direction.

The woman fell silent.

The eyes remained fixed upon him.

For the first time—

the Traveler felt something from them.

Not danger.

Not hatred.

Recognition.

The sensation lasted only a moment.

Then vanished.

The voice spoke again.

Quieter than before.

"...Interesting."

Silence.

The Traveler remained motionless.

The chamber remained motionless.

Then the woman asked a question.

A simple question.

A dangerous question.

One that immediately felt wrong.

"...Do you remember my death?"

The darkness deepened.

The green eyes stopped moving.

And somewhere within the chamber—

something smiled.
