Chapter 111 - The Thing Beneath the Chamber

Scene 111 — "When the Eyes Disappeared"

The question lingered within the darkness.

Do you remember my death?

The chamber became silent.

The Traveler stood motionless among the ancient pillars.

The green eyes watched from the far side of the hall.

Unblinking.

Patient.

Ancient.

The woman's presence lingered like a fading memory.

Then—

it vanished.

Instantly.

The chamber changed.

The Traveler felt it immediately.

The strange familiarity disappeared.

The soft amusement vanished.

The unseen smile vanished.

As though someone had simply stopped existing.

The darkness deepened.

The pillars became taller.

The silence became heavier.

The Traveler slowly turned.

Searching.

Nothing.

No voice.

No movement.

No woman.

Gone.

The green eyes remained.

Watching.

Waiting.

The Traveler began walking.

One step.

Then another.

The distance between him and the eyes slowly closed.

The pendant rested against his palm.

Cold.

Silent.

The chamber stretched endlessly around him.

The green eyes never moved.

Never blinked.

Never retreated.

Then—

they vanished.

The Traveler stopped.

One moment they existed.

The next—

nothing remained.

Only darkness.

Only shadows.

Only ancient stone.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The Traveler remained still.

Listening.

Waiting.

Then—

something moved.

Far away.

A sound echoed through the chamber.

Stone grinding against stone.

Deep.

Heavy.

Ancient.

The sound came again.

Closer.

The Traveler's gaze sharpened.

The darkness concealed everything.

Yet the movement continued.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Massive.

Another sound followed.

A scrape.

Long.

Dragging.

The sound of scales moving across ancient stone.

The chamber trembled faintly.

Dust drifted from distant pillars.

The Traveler remained motionless.

The darkness moved again.

This time the entire hall seemed to breathe.

The scale of it became apparent.

Whatever occupied the chamber—

it was enormous.

Far larger than the pillars.

Far larger than the tunnel above.

Something ancient shifted within the darkness.

Watching him.

Circling him.

The Traveler slowly turned.

Searching.

Finding nothing.

Then—

the darkness exploded.

A colossal tail emerged from the shadows.

Fast.

Far too fast.

The Traveler saw it.

Yet exhaustion slowed him.

The battle with the Hunter.

The collapse.

The Abyss.

Everything still lingered within his body.

The tail struck.

The impact landed across his side.

The chamber erupted.

Ancient stone shattered.

The Traveler flew through the air.

A pillar exploded upon contact.

Fragments scattered across the hall.

The force carried him through a second pillar.

Then a third.

The chamber shook violently.

Dust filled the darkness.

The Traveler struck the ground.

Hard.

Stone cracked beneath him.

The impact echoed through the mountain.

Pain surged through his body.

His vision blurred.

For a moment—

everything became distant.

The chamber spun.

The darkness twisted.

Then another sound emerged.

A low rumble.

Not a roar.

Not a growl.

Something older.

The sound vibrated through the mountain itself.

The Traveler pushed himself upward.

Slowly.

Blood marked the corner of his mouth.

The exhaustion had returned.

Worse than before.

His muscles protested every movement.

The chamber continued trembling.

Something enormous moved beyond the dust.

A shadow.

Then another.

The outline stretched across the hall.

Long.

Massive.

Ancient.

The dust slowly settled.

And for the first time—

the Traveler saw part of it.

Scales.

Dark green scales.

Each one larger than a shield.

Moonlight from the distant entrance briefly reflected across them.

Then vanished.

The creature remained mostly hidden.

The darkness protected it.

Concealed it.

Only fragments could be seen.

A section of its body.

Part of a coiled shape wrapped around ancient pillars.

Enough to understand one thing.

The mountain had not been built above a grave.

The mountain had been built above this.

The chamber trembled again.

The Traveler rose fully.

Unsteady.

Silent.

The darkness shifted.

Then—

two green eyes opened.

Much closer this time.

Not across the chamber.

Directly ahead.

Watching him.

The eyes were enormous.

Ancient.

Intelligent.

And utterly inhuman.

Neither moved.

For several seconds the Traveler and the creature simply stared at one another.

The chamber held its breath.

Then—

the serpent moved.

And the entire mountain shook.
