Chapter 109 - The Thing Buried Too Recently

Scene 109 — "The Grave Was Not Empty"

The mountain remained silent.

The woman's hand protruded from the earth.

Motionless.

Pale beneath the moonlight.

The sea of flowers stretched endlessly around the hill.

Silver petals drifted across the night.

The Traveler stood beside the grave.

Listening.

The heartbeat had vanished.

The voice had vanished.

Only silence remained.

Yet something felt different now.

The grave no longer felt abandoned.

It felt occupied.

The Traveler crouched beside the mound.

The soil appeared old.

Very old.

Roots had grown through it.

Flowers had claimed it.

Time had settled upon it.

Yet the hand remained untouched.

Unchanged.

Wrong.

The Traveler pressed his fingers into the earth.

The soil gave way easily.

Too easily.

As though someone had disturbed it before.

Not recently.

Yet not long enough ago for the mountain to forget.

The Traveler began clearing the earth.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Moonlight illuminated the grave.

The flowers surrounding it remained perfectly still.

Watching.

Waiting.

The deeper he dug—

the stranger the soil became.

The upper layers felt ancient.

The lower layers felt newer.

As though the grave had been opened once before.

And then sealed again.

The Traveler paused.

His fingers brushed against something solid.

Not stone.

Not bone.

Something else.

He cleared more soil away.

An object emerged.

Small.

Dark.

Weathered.

The Traveler lifted it from the grave.

A pendant.

Simple.

Unremarkable.

Yet the moment moonlight touched it—

the Traveler became still.

Because the pendant was not ancient.

The leather cord remained intact.

The metal had barely aged.

The object looked decades old at most.

Perhaps less.

Yet the grave surrounding it belonged to another age entirely.

The contradiction settled heavily upon the mountain.

The Traveler studied it.

No symbols.

No markings.

Nothing identifying its owner.

Only a plain dark pendant.

Then—

the mountain trembled.

A faint vibration.

The Traveler's gaze shifted instantly toward the grave.

The woman's fingers had moved.

Not much.

Only slightly.

Yet they had moved.

The pendant suddenly felt colder.

The flowers around the mound shivered.

The still blossoms touching the woman's hand remained frozen.

Everything else began moving.

The wind returned.

Stronger than before.

The sea of flowers bent beneath its passage.

The stars overhead dimmed.

One by one.

As though clouds were passing.

Yet no clouds existed.

The Traveler looked toward the hand.

The fingers moved again.

A slow motion.

Almost reluctant.

As though awakening demanded effort.

The earth surrounding the wrist cracked softly.

The sound echoed across the hillside.

The mountain listened.

The Traveler remained still.

The pendant rested within his hand.

Cold.

Heavy.

Waiting.

Another crack.

The soil shifted.

Tiny fragments rolled down the side of the grave.

The woman's hand rose slightly.

Not enough to escape.

Only enough to prove something impossible.

Someone was beneath the earth.

Someone alive.

Or something close enough.

The flowers surrounding the grave suddenly bowed.

Thousands of blossoms.

All at once.

Not toward the Traveler.

Not toward the sky.

Toward the grave.

The gesture resembled reverence.

The Traveler watched.

The mountain watched.

The stars watched.

Then—

the hand clenched.

A fist.

The movement was small.

Yet the effect was immediate.

The hill shook violently.

The earth split.

Cracks raced across the grave.

Flowers scattered into the night.

The Traveler stepped backward.

The pendant grew colder.

The wind howled across the mountain.

The mound collapsed inward.

Not fully.

Not yet.

But enough.

Enough for darkness to become visible beneath the earth.

A hollow space.

A chamber.

Something hidden below.

The Traveler's gaze remained fixed upon the opening.

The woman's hand slowly disappeared back into the darkness.

Not pulled.

Not dragged.

Descending.

As though inviting him to follow.

The wind abruptly stopped.

The flowers became still.

The mountain became silent.

Then from the darkness beneath the grave—

a single sound emerged.

A breath.

Soft.

Slow.

The breath of someone awakening after a very long sleep.

And deep below the mountain—

something opened its eyes.
