Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 : " THE ELITE HUNT "

The moment the system warning appeared.

[Warning: Elite Entity Detected]

—everything changed.

Not visibly.

Not immediately.

But something in the air shifted, like the world itself had taken a step back, creating space… for what was about to happen.

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

Because they all felt it.

The pressure.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Different from the lesser creatures they had faced before.

This… was something else.

Ethan stood at the front, his gaze fixed on the approaching entity, his breathing slow, controlled, almost unnaturally steady. Behind him, Daniel adjusted his grip on the metal pipe, the tension in his arms visible despite his attempt to remain composed. Lila shifted slightly to the side, positioning herself near a broken wall, her eyes scanning for escape routes rather than direct confrontation. Mark swallowed hard, his knuckles white around the knife in his hand, his stance betraying his inexperience.

Sam—

Didn't move at all.

"…We shouldn't fight that," he whispered again, quieter this time, as if saying it louder would somehow draw the creature's attention faster.

Ethan didn't respond.

Because the decision had already been made.

Not verbally.

Not collectively.

But instinctively.

The creature had seen them.

And in this world—

Being seen… meant engagement.

The Elite stepped further into the dim light, its full form now visible. Its body was larger, more compact, built with a density that suggested overwhelming strength rather than speed. The cracks along its skin glowed with a steady, molten light, unlike the erratic flicker of the lesser ghouls.

It wasn't unstable.

It was refined.

Its movements were slow, deliberate, each step calculated, as if it had no need to rush. Its head tilted slightly, observing them—not as prey in panic, but as variables.

Assessing.

Judging.

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"It's not going to rush," he said quietly.

Daniel glanced at him.

"…You sure?"

"Yes."

"How can you tell?"

Ethan didn't look at him.

"Because it doesn't need to."

The words settled heavily between them.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"Alright… then we adapt."

That was the first real shift.

From fear—

To strategy.

"Mark," Daniel said, his voice low but firm. "Stay back. Don't engage unless you have a clear opening. Lila, keep distance. If it charges, you move, not fight."

"And you?" she asked.

Daniel's grip tightened.

"I'll draw its attention."

"No," Ethan said.

The word cut through the plan instantly.

Daniel frowned.

"…What?"

Ethan stepped forward.

"I will."

Daniel stared at him.

"That thing will crush you if you miscalculate."

Ethan's gaze remained fixed on the Elite.

"…Then I won't."

There was no arrogance in his tone.

No bravado.

Just certainty.

And that—

Was far more unsettling.

The Elite moved.

Not fast.

Not suddenly.

But forward.

Closing the distance step by step.

Its eyes never left Ethan.

As if it had already chosen him.

Good.

Ethan exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulders once, feeling the faint tension in his muscles, the subtle flow of something beneath his skin—the energy he had absorbed, still present, still active.

Still his.

"…Stay out of my range," he said quietly, not turning back.

Daniel hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Fine. But if things go wrong—"

"They won't."

Ethan took another step forward.

Then another.

Until the distance between him and the Elite was no more than a few meters.

Silence fell again.

Even the distant sounds of the city seemed to fade, leaving only the faint, heavy rhythm of the creature's movement.

Then—

It attacked.

Not with speed.

But with force.

Its arm swung forward, the motion slow enough to track—but powerful enough to distort the air itself. Ethan's body reacted instantly, shifting to the side, narrowly avoiding the impact as the ground where he had stood cracked under the force of the strike.

Too strong.

Direct confrontation wasn't an option.

Ethan moved again, circling, testing.

The Elite turned with him.

Tracking.

Always tracking.

"It's reading you," Lila called out.

"I know," Ethan replied calmly.

Good.

That meant it relied on observation.

Prediction.

Patterns.

Which meant—It could be misled...The Elite struck again...This time faster.

Ethan barely avoided it, the edge of the attack grazing his arm, sending a sharp line of pain through him.

Not deep...But enough...He didn't react...Didn't slow.

Instead—He stepped closer.Inside its reach.

Daniel's voice snapped from behind.

"Ethan, what are you doing?!"

The Elite reacted instantly, its other arm moving to intercept, but Ethan was already there—too close, too fast.

His hand shot forward—And made contact.

[Devour Activated]

The reaction was immediate.

The Elite didn't scream like the others.

It didn't thrash wildly.

But its body tensed.

Its glow pulsed—Once...Hard.

And Ethan felt it.

The difference.

The energy flowing into him was—Denser...Heavier...More resistant.

Like trying to force open something that refused to yield.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"…You're not easy," he muttered.

The Elite responded.

Violently.

Its body shifted with sudden force, its free arm slamming into Ethan's side before he could disengage.

The impact—Was devastating.

His body was thrown backward, crashing into the ground with enough force to knock the air from his lungs completely.

Pain exploded through his ribs...Sharp...Deep...Real.

For a brief second, his vision blurred.

Darkened.

"…Ethan!" Sam shouted.

The Elite didn't rush...Again.

It simply walked toward him.Slow...Certain...Like it knew—He wasn't done.

Ethan coughed, forcing air back into his lungs as he pushed himself up, his body protesting the movement. The pain was real.

Significant.

But beneath it—Something else moved.

The faint warmth of his regeneration.

Slowing the damage.

Holding him together.

"…Good," he whispered.

Because now he knew...He could survive a hit.

At least one...That was enough...The Elite stepped closer.

Ethan stood...Their eyes met...And this time—He smiled.

Not out of confidence.

But understanding.

"I see you now," he said quietly.

Then—He moved...Faster than before...Not retreating...Advancing.

The Elite reacted.

Its arm came down again—But this time, Ethan didn't dodge completely...He let it hit.

Partially.

Redirecting the force just enough to avoid a fatal blow while closing the distance fully.

Pain surged again.

But he didn't stop...His hand pressed against its body—Firm...Unyielding.

[Devour Activated – Continuous]

This time—He didn't let go...The energy surged...violent...Relentless.

The Elite resisted...Harder.

Its body shook, its glow intensifying as it fought back, as if trying to expel him, reject the consumption.

But Ethan held on.

His grip tightening.

His expression hardening.

"You're strong…" he said through clenched teeth.

"…but so am I."

The ground beneath them cracked further as the struggle intensified. The others watched, frozen between fear and disbelief as the two forces collided—not in speed or chaos, but in raw, opposing power.

Second by second—The balance shifted...Slowly...Subtly...But undeniably.

The Elite's movements weakened...Its glow dimmed...Its resistance faltered.

Ethan's breathing grew heavier...But steadier...stronger.

"Almost…" he whispered.

The creature made one final attempt, its body surging with force.

Then—Stopped...Completely...The glow vanished.

Its form collapsed inward—And dissolved.

Gone...Silence...Again...But this time—Different.

Ethan remained standing...Barely...But standing...The system flickered.

[Elite Entity Consumed][Devour Level Up][New Trait Unlocked: Enhanced Physique]

Ethan exhaled slowly, his body trembling slightly as the new energy settled within him.

Behind him—

No one spoke.

Because what they had just witnessed—Wasn't normal...Wasn't human.

Ethan turned slightly.

Their eyes met his.

Fear.

Respect.

Distance.

All of it was there.

And he understood.

Because now—He understood something even more important.

....

This world didn't reward survival.

It rewarded evolution.

And Ethan—Had just taken his first real step.
