Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 : WHEN IT MATTERS "

The night didn't exist in this world.

Or at least—It didn't fall the way it used to.

Time passed, but the sky remained that same dull gray, unmoving, suffocating, as if the world had been frozen at the exact moment everything collapsed.

Inside the building, the group rested—but no one truly slept.

They couldn't...Not with the silence pressing in like that.

Not with the knowledge that something could break through at any moment.

Ethan sat near the window, his back against the wall, his eyes half-closed—but not resting. Never resting. His awareness stretched outward, tracing every faint sound, every shift in the air.

Footsteps...Breathing...Movement...Control...He had learned quickly...Too quickly.

Across the room, Lila sat with her knees pulled slightly inward, her gaze lowered, but not distant. She wasn't asleep either. Her eyes would lift occasionally—briefly—toward him.

Then away...Like something unfinished lingered between them...And it did.—Morning didn't come...But movement did.

Adrian stood at the center of the room, his presence alone enough to gather attention.

"We don't stay here," he said.

Simple...Direct...No wasted words.

"We move today."

Daniel crossed his arms. "Where?"

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"There's a supply zone three streets from here. A store complex. We passed it earlier—but didn't clear it."

Lila's eyes lifted.

"Meaning?"

Adrian's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Meaning it's still active."

A quiet shift ran through the group...Tension...Awareness.

Ethan opened his eyes fully.

"…And you want to go back?"

Adrian looked at him. "Yes."..."Why?"

"Because resources matter," Adrian replied calmly. "Food. Water. Tools. We can't survive long-term without securing them."

Practical...Logical...But incomplete.

Ethan saw it immediately.

"You're testing the group," he said.

Not a question...Adrian's expression didn't change.

"…Among other things."

Silence.

No one argued...Because they understood...This wasn't just about supplies.

It was about survival of the capable...And elimination of the weak.

"…We move in formation," Adrian continued. "Two in front. Two in the rear. The rest support."

His eyes flickered briefly to Ethan.

"You'll take point."

It wasn't framed as an order...But it was one...Ethan didn't react...Didn't refuse.

"…Fine."

The streets felt different when they moved as a group...Not safer.

Just… louder...More presence...More attention.

Ethan walked at the front, his pace steady, his senses expanded far beyond what the others could perceive. Every step he took wasn't just movement—it was calculation.

Distance...Angles...Escape routes...Kill zones.

Behind him, Daniel kept close, gripping the metal pipe tightly,

while Lila stayed slightly to the side—alert, watching.

Adrian remained further back...Observing everything...Always observing.

"…Left," Ethan said suddenly.

The group froze instantly.

"What?" Mark whispered.

Ethan didn't turn. "Movement. Inside the building."

A second passed...Then—A low scraping sound confirmed it...Daniel exhaled slowly.

"…I didn't hear that."

"I know," Ethan replied.

Because he wasn't hearing the same world anymore.—They reached the store complex faster than expected.

A large structure...Glass shattered...Doors partially open...Dark inside...Too dark.

"…This is a bad idea," Sam muttered.

No one disagreed. But no one stopped...Ethan stepped forward.Crossed the threshold.

And immediately—Something felt wrong...Not danger...Not immediate threat.

But… density.Like the air inside was heavier.Filled with something unseen.

"…Stay close," he said quietly.

The group followed...Slowly...Carefully.

Inside, the shelves were still intact in places, scattered in others. Items lay across the floor, untouched.

Too untouched...No signs of struggle.No blood...No bodies...That alone—Was unsettling.

"…Where are the creatures?" Lila whispered.

Ethan's eyes moved slowly across the space.

"…Here."

The word came just as—Something moved.!Above...Fast.

A shape dropped from the ceiling—Straight toward Lila...She barely had time to react.

A sharp gasp escaped her as she stumbled back, her footing slipping on debris.

Too slow...Too exposed...The creature's claws came down.

And stopped...Mid-air...Ethan's hand had caught it...Perfectly.

His grip locked around its arm, his body positioned between it and Lila without hesitation, without delay—as if the movement had been decided before it even happened.

His eyes were cold...Focused...Dangerous.

"…Back," he said.

Lila didn't argue. She moved instantly. The creature screeched, twisting violently—but Ethan didn't release it.

[Devour Activated]

The energy surged...Immediate...Violent...But Ethan didn't even flinch.

Because this time—There was no hesitation...No uncertainty.Only intent.

The creature's body convulsed, its form collapsing rapidly as the energy was torn from it, its resistance crushed under Ethan's grip.

Seconds...That's all it took...Then—Nothing...Gone...Silence.

But not for long...More movement...Multiple...From the shadows. From above. From behind shelves.

"…Ambush," Daniel muttered.

Ethan stepped forward slightly, placing himself just ahead of Lila again—subtle, but intentional.

He didn't look at her...Didn't say anything...But the message was clear...Stay behind me.

The creatures began to emerge.

Four.Then six.Then more.Different sizes.Different speeds.Not random.Organized.

"…They're guarding this place," Adrian said quietly.

Ethan's gaze hardened. "Good."

Daniel blinked. "…Good?!"

Ethan's voice dropped slightly."More targets."

That was the shift...Clear...Undeniable...He stepped forward...Alone.

The creatures lunged...All at once...And Ethan—Didn't retreat.

Because this time—He wasn't fighting to survive...He was fighting to protect.
