LYRA
"why should I"
Her words seem to catch me off guard, I looked at her.
Was she seriously asking that?
Something moved beneath my skin. Low and impatient and completely uninterested in negotiation.
Like seriously, my wolf said inside me, her voice carrying a particular edge I was beginning to recognize as her version of enthusiasm. Stop begging this bitch and let's slit her throat while no one's watching.
Not helpful, I told her sharply.
"Because I saved you," I said aloud.
The words came out before I finished deciding to say them.
Mandy stared at me for one second.
Then she laughed with her head tilting back slightly, genuine and loud and entirely too much for the quiet morning forest.
"You saved me?" she repeated, the laughter still in her voice. "That's rich. Remind me exactly how, because from where I was standing you literally attacked me. You threw me into a tree. You monster, you almost..."
The heat came fast. My wolf didn't ask permission this time.
