Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Poison of Silence

The air in the vault had grown thick, smelling of expensive cologne, salt from dried tears, and the cold scent of damp marble. Xuan sat on the edge of the bed, his silhouette jagged against the red emergency glow. He didn't move for an hour, his eyes fixed on Ning as she lay curled on the rug, her body occasionally jerking from the remnants of a sob. "Is it quiet out there because they've won, or because they're waiting for you to signal them?" Xuan's voice was a low, terrifying rasp that sliced through the stillness. Ning didn't lift her head, her hair a tangled silk curtain across her face. "There is no signal, Xuan. There is only the silence of my heart breaking because you think I could ever belong to anyone else," she whispered, her voice barely a thread. This extreme level of misunderstanding was a cancer in the room; every word of devotion she offered was twisted into a coded message of betrayal in Xuan's mind. He stood up, his footsteps silent on the carpet, and knelt beside her. He grabbed her hand—not gently, but with a crushing possessiveness that spoke of a man drowning. "I saw the way you touched the letter they sent. Your fingers lingered on the seal. Was it the debt you were feeling, or the touch of the man who wrote it?" Ning finally looked up, her eyes bloodshot and hollow, reflecting an extreme level of misery. "It was a letter from my mother, Xuan! She was begging me to come home because she's sick from the stress!" Xuan's laugh was a sharp, jagged sound that made her flinch. "Stress? Or the guilt of selling her daughter to a rival family for the price of a hospital bill?" He gripped her shoulders, shaking her slightly, his jealousy flaring into a manic fire. "They are using her illness to pull you away from me! And you... you cry for them, but you won't cry for the man who is losing his soul right in front of you!" Ning reached up, her fingers trembling as she touched the dark circles under his eyes. "I am crying for you! My eyes are dry because I have no more tears left for myself! I love you so much it's a sickness, but you're making me wish for the dark!" Xuan's expression didn't soften; instead, he leaned in until their foreheads touched, his breathing ragged. "Then stay in the dark with me. If you love me, let them think you're dead. Let the Wei family mourn. Let your parents regret their greed. Only then will I know you're truly mine." The extremity of his demand left Ning breathless. He wanted her to erase her existence just to soothe the monster of his jealousy. She felt a wave of extreme lovingness mixed with absolute terror. She nodded slowly, her forehead leaning into his, a silent vow that felt like a suicide pact. "I will stay," she breathed. "I will stay until the world forgets my name, as long as you
