Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Silent Hunger of the Heart

The white walls of the psychiatric wing were a taunt to Xuan's fractured mind. He sat on the floor, refusing the bed, refusing the water, refusing the very air that didn't carry the scent of Ning's skin. His jealousy had reached a level of metabolic necessity; it was the only thing keeping his heart beating. "They think they can wash you off me with their bleach and their medicine," he whispered to the corner of the room, his eyes wide and bloodshot. He began to scratch her name into the floor tiles with his fingernails until they bled, a rhythmic, obsessive motion. The misunderstanding was a jagged glass wall; the doctors saw a man in a manic episode, but Xuan saw a warrior being kept from his queen while a pretender sat on his throne. He could almost feel Wei Chen's presence near her, a phantom itch under his skin that made him want to scream until his lungs burst. "She's crying. I know she's crying," he groaned, his head thumping against the wall in a slow, agonized beat. The extreme level of his possessiveness made him feel every tear she shed as if it were acid on his own face. He imagined the Wei family leaning over her, using their "heroism" as a shroud to bury his memory. The misery of being unable to reach out and snap the neck of anyone who looked at her was a physical torture. He wasn't a patient; he was a volcano capped by a thin layer of psychiatric restraint, waiting for the moment the pressure became too much to contain.
