Chapter 28 - TRUTH IN THE SHADOW

The wind was cold at the top of the ruined shrine.

Yue Yan sat on a stone ledge, staring at the sky. Her robes fluttered softly, and her nine-tailed

fox, Xiao Jiu, curled beside her. The silence was deep — not heavy, but thoughtful.

Wen Shouye stood nearby, watching her from the shadows.

He hadn't said much since she arrived. But now, as the stars shifted overhead, he finally spoke.

"There's something I want to show you."

Yue Yan glanced at him. "What is it?"

He extended a hand.

She hesitated, then placed her fingers in his. His hand was warm. Steady. Strong in a way that

made her heart thump — not from fear, but from something she didn't want to name.

He led her through a hidden path, carved between two black cliffs.

At the end was a cave. Inside, golden runes glowed faintly on the walls. The air shimmered with

a strange stillness, like the breath of something ancient.

Yue Yan touched one of the glowing symbols.

She froze.

Images flickered through her mind — visions of Lord Qingxiao, standing tall and proud, then

chained and silenced. A council of Divine Lords, their faces turned away. And then… a fall. A

scream.

A door closed forever.

She gasped and stepped back.

"This…" she whispered. "This was real."

Wen Shouye nodded. "Lord Qingxiao didn't fall to darkness. He was betrayed. The corruption

started when they tried to erase him."

Yue Yan's voice trembled. "Why didn't anyone speak of this?"

"Because they were afraid," Wen Shouye said softly. "Afraid of what he knew. Afraid of what it

would mean if the gods weren't perfect."

Yue Yan looked at him, truly looked.

"You… were the only one who remembered."

He said nothing.

Then, in a quiet voice, she asked, "Why show me this?"

Wen Shouye stepped closer. "Because I know what it feels like to carry a truth too heavy to hold

alone."

Their eyes locked.

The silence between them wasn't empty this time. It was full — full of everything unspoken.

Yue Yan's voice was barely a whisper. "I shouldn't be here."

"But you are," he replied, even softer.

And in that cave, where history had been buried…

Two hearts stood still, caught between truth and something even deeper.

Something dangerous.

Something real.
