Chapter 31 - SENT TO WATCH, SWORN TO END

The village slept beneath a pale, heavy fog.

Yue Yun sat beside the sacred fire, but his mind wasn't at rest.

The scroll Lan Zhi had discovered still lingered in his thoughts—its markings faintly resonating with Ao Xuan's awakening.

The pieces were connecting.

Slowly.

Carefully.

But nothing about the picture they formed felt reassuring.

Ao Xuan coiled around the outer cliffs, silent and watchful.

He had not spoken in a long time.

But he was waiting.

So was Yue Yun.

Because deep down, he knew—

Someone was coming.

He just didn't expect her.

Light shimmered at the base of the mountain.

It didn't strike the ground like lightning.

It arrived like it had always belonged there.

From it stepped a woman in flowing white and gold robes. Her long hair drifted behind her like silk caught in an unseen wind.

Her presence was calm.

Too calm.

Like still water hiding depth no one could see.

Divine Envoy Shu Lian.

A High Celestial sent by the Divine Lords—most often for matters that were never meant to be spoken aloud.

Yue Yun stood slowly.

"Envoy," he said evenly.

She bowed her head slightly.

"Yue Yun."

Her voice hadn't changed.

But something else had.

He studied her carefully.

She looked the same as she did years ago… back when he was still a Celestial General.

Back when she used to smile more easily.

She wasn't smiling now.

"Why are you here?" he asked.

"To observe your tribulation," she said calmly. "And ensure it does not exceed its limits."

Yue Yun's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Limits… or control?"

She didn't answer.

She stepped closer instead.

"The Divine Lords are concerned," Shu Lian said. "Your dragon carries a seal from before the recorded heavens. That kind of power is… unstable."

"It's mine," Yue Yun said quietly. "And I didn't ask for it."

"That doesn't make it harmless."

Silence stretched between them.

Then—

"What happens if I use it?" he asked.

Shu Lian finally met his gaze.

"Then I may have to act."

A low growl echoed from the cliffs.

Ao Xuan had moved.

Yue Yun's hand slowly rested on the hilt of his sealed sword.

He didn't draw it.

Not yet.

But his posture had already changed.

"You were kind to me once," he said softly.

"And I still am," she replied. "That's why I'm warning you."

She turned away.

But before she left, her voice cut through the cold air like ice:

"If you awaken what sleeps inside you… you may not be welcomed back to the Celestial Realm."
