Yue Yan woke slowly.
She was still in the corrupted realm, lying beneath the same twisted tree. Nearby, a small fire burned quietly. Its flames were a deep purple, unnatural… yet somehow warm.
Safe.
Not far from her, Wen Shouye sat by the edge of the lake, his gaze fixed on the dark water. He didn't react when she stirred. He just remained there, calm and silent, like he had all the time in the world.
Yue Yan pushed herself up slowly. Her body still ached, but her strength was returning little by little.
She didn't remember falling asleep.
But she knew one thing.
He had stayed.
"You didn't leave," she said softly.
Wen Shouye didn't look at her. "You were too weak to move," he replied. "I didn't want you waking up alone."
She didn't know how to respond to that.
It felt… strange.
This was the Supreme Demon Lord. The one everyone feared.
And yet—
Right now, he didn't feel like an enemy at all.
"This doesn't change anything," she said after a moment.
"I know."
His answer came easily. No argument. No pressure.
That made it even harder.
Yue Yan looked up at the sky. It was still dark, still unfamiliar—but the weight in the air had lessened slightly.
Maybe her presence had changed something.
Or maybe… it was something else.
She stood.
"I should go."
Only then did Wen Shouye turn to look at her.
"Will you tell them I helped you?"
She paused.
"No."
A faint shift in his expression.
"Because you want to protect me?"
"No," she said calmly. "Because if I tell them, they'll think I've already turned against them."
A brief silence.
"And I haven't."
He studied her for a moment… then gave a small nod.
"I won't stop you."
Yue Yan held his gaze for just a second longer.
Then she turned.
And walked into the mist.
She didn't say goodbye.
—
Back in the Celestial Realm, Yue Yun stood by the gate.
He hadn't moved since she left.
Time had passed, but to him, it felt slow… heavy. Every moment stretched longer than it should.
Then—
The portal flickered.
Light burst through.
Yue Yan stepped out.
Her robes were dusted with ash. She looked tired—but she was standing.
She was safe.
Yue Yun rushed forward immediately. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," she said.
He searched her face carefully. "Did you see him?"
Yue Yan hesitated.
Just for a moment.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
Yue Yun let out a breath, relief washing over him. "Good."
He nodded.
Yue Yan nodded too.
But something inside her didn't settle.
The answer she gave wasn't true.
It was just… easier.
She didn't want him to look at her differently.
Didn't want to explain something she didn't even understand herself.
So for now—
She kept the truth to herself.
