Chapter 18 - A STRANGER AMONG MORTALS

The sky was gray when Yue Yun opened his eyes.

He lay on cold grass, his robes torn and plain. The warmth of the Celestial Realm was gone.

So was his power.

For a moment, he didn't move.

He just stared upward.

Everything felt… wrong.

His body felt heavier. The air was dull, empty—no trace of spirit energy. No floating clouds, no golden light.

Just trees.

Wind.

And the distant sound of birds.

Slowly, he sat up, rubbing his forehead. His memories of descending were blurred, like something half-forgotten.

The Divine Lords hadn't told him where he would land.

Only that he had to survive.

Grow.

And pass the trial of the heart.

Yue Yun exhaled quietly and stood.

A narrow path stretched through the woods ahead. With nowhere else to go, he followed it.

After some time, the trees opened into a small village.

It was simple, alive in a way the Celestial Realm wasn't.

Farmers carried baskets through muddy paths. Children laughed as they ran past. Elders sat by a well, talking quietly.

The air smelled of firewood… and something cooking.

Yue Yun stepped into the center of it all.

A few people glanced at him, curious but not afraid.

"Are you lost?"

He turned.

A girl stood there, watching him. Her hair was short, her eyes bright with curiosity. She looked about his age—at least, in this world.

"I think so," Yue Yun answered.

She smiled.

"Then you must be hungry. Come with me."

Her name was Lian Hua.

Her family owned a small noodle shop near the edge of the square.

Without asking questions, she placed a bowl of hot food in front of him.

Yue Yun sat on a simple wooden stool, staring at the steam rising from the bowl.

Then he took a bite.

And paused.

It was warm.

Not the warmth of power or divine energy—

But something softer.

Something… human.

"You don't talk much," Lian Hua said, sitting across from him.

"I'm still… getting used to things."

She tilted her head slightly. "You're not from around here, are you?"

"No."

She didn't press him.

She simply smiled and handed him a cloth. "Then take your time."

That evening, she brought him a blanket and led him to a small storage hut.

"You can stay here for now," she said. "At least until you figure things out."

Yue Yun looked at her, a little confused.

"Why are you helping me?"

Lian Hua shrugged lightly.

"You looked lost," she said. "And kind."

She said it like it was the simplest thing in the world.

Then she left.

That night, Yue Yun lay on the wooden floor, staring up at the low ceiling.

Outside, crickets chirped softly. The village was quiet, wrapped in the stillness of night.

He listened.

To the wind.

To the silence.

To a world that didn't know who he was.

A strange thought came to him.

Soft.

Uncertain.

Was this how it all began for gods long ago?

Not with power.

Not with war.

But with something small.

Something simple.

A single act of kindness.
