Chapter 23 - THE WARNING SHE COULDN’T IGNORE

Yue Yan sat at the edge of Sky Mirror Lake, her feet just brushing the surface. The water was so still it looked like polished glass, perfectly reflecting the endless spread of stars above. It should have been calming.

But her mind refused to be quiet.

For days, she had tried to push Wen Shouye out of her thoughts—burying herself in training, in duty, in the path that would one day make her the Eleventh Divine Lord. She told herself it didn't matter. That he didn't matter.

But the feeling in her chest wouldn't fade.

And now… it wasn't just him anymore.

It was her brother.

Yue Yun had been gone for some time, undergoing his mortal trial. That, in itself, wasn't unusual. The Celestial Realm never interfered with such things. Still, something felt off.

Wrong.

She couldn't explain it, but it lingered deep in her bones—like a cold wind curling through her chest, whispering that something unseen was growing.

And whatever it was… it didn't feel like it came from the Demon Realm.

That night, while walking through the Divine Archives, Yue Yan slowed her steps as she overheard two High Immortals speaking in hushed tones.

"…the corruption near the mortal borders is spreading faster than we expected."

"It shouldn't be. The Demon Realm hasn't made a move in weeks."

"I'm telling you—it's something else."

Yue Yan stilled behind a pillar, listening.

"But if it's not demons… then what?"

The second voice dropped even lower. "There are whispers… that an immortal has fallen. That someone in the Celestial Realm is hiding their betrayal."

Yue Yan's eyes sharpened. Her heartbeat quickened.

A traitor… among the gods?

She stepped forward, and the two immortals immediately fell silent. They bowed quickly and left, their footsteps echoing down the hall.

But the silence they left behind didn't quiet her thoughts.

Later, in her chambers, Yue Yan stared at the small flame hovering in her palm. It burned steadily—her divine energy, controlled and calm.

Unlike her.

Xiao Jiu, her fox spirit, curled gently around her shoulders, sensing the tension she couldn't hide. The fox pressed closer, warm and familiar.

"Something's coming," Yue Yan murmured softly. "And I don't know if I'm ready."

Xiao Jiu blinked at her, then rested its head against her cheek.

Yue Yan closed her eyes.

She didn't know what unsettled her more—the idea that someone in the Celestial Realm might be hiding a terrible truth…

…or the fact that the only person who made her feel safe—

wasn't a god at all.

He was the Demon Lord.

And she hadn't seen him since that night in the Cloud Garden.

CHAPTER 24: THE ONE WHO REMEMBERED

The next morning, the sky was pale and quiet—but Yue Yun couldn't rest.

The battle from the night before still lingered, not in his body, but somewhere deeper. The blue flame within him had stirred again, restless, whispering warnings he couldn't quite understand.

He moved through the forest with care, stepping over gnarled roots and patches of blackened earth. The corruption hadn't spread overnight.

But it hadn't faded either.

It felt like it was waiting.

Waiting for something… or someone.

Near the riverbank, Yue Yun paused.

He wasn't alone.

A presence lingered nearby—calm, but unmistakable.

He stepped forward quietly, just as a figure in a long green robe turned to face him.

The man looked young—barely twenty—with gentle eyes and a quiet, steady aura. Mortal, at first glance.

But not entirely.

"…Yue Yun?" the man said, as if he couldn't quite believe what he was seeing.

Yue Yun froze. "Do I… know you?"

The man smiled faintly. "Not anymore. But I remember you. From when I was a child."

Yue Yun studied him, searching his face.

And then it clicked.

"You were…" he said slowly, "…Lan Zhi."

Lan Zhi nodded, his eyes lighting up. "I never forgot. The god with calm eyes… and fire in his hands."

Yue Yun exhaled, still stunned. "But why are you here?"

"I was reborn in the Mortal Realm," Lan Zhi explained. "Some souls carry fragments of their past lives. I remember… just enough to know this darkness isn't natural."

Yue Yun's expression sharpened. "You've seen it?"

Lan Zhi's voice dropped. "It comes from the western forest. It visits people in their dreams. Whispers to them."

"And then?"

"They change," Lan Zhi said quietly. "They lose themselves. Forget who they are."

Yue Yun's fists tightened.

If something could steal memories… it could destroy far more than a single life. Entire realms could fall.

And this wasn't how demons operated.

This was something else.

Something worse.

He looked at Lan Zhi, resolve settling in his eyes.

"I need your help," Yue Yun said. "And you need to stay close. It's not safe here anymore."

Lan Zhi didn't hesitate. He nodded. "Then I'll stand by your side—just like you once stood by mine."

Far beyond them, hidden in the shadows between the trees, a masked figure watched.

It didn't move.

Didn't blink.

But slowly—

it smiled.

Because Yue Yun was exactly where it wanted him to be.
