Unit-01 had lost its connection. The pilot's fate was unknown. The monster was still alive, still brimming with strength.
Without hesitation, Misato Katsuragi chose to terminate the battle and prioritize the pilot's safety, preparing to eject the entry plug from Unit-01's body.
But it was useless.
Nothing responded.
At this point, no external means could affect Unit-01 anymore.
Inside headquarters, the staff could do nothing but watch the fallen Evangelion on the screen and sigh.
Then—
A warm sensation spread across Shinji Ikari's body, as if something gentle, comforting, and deeply familiar had appeared nearby.
At that very moment, Unit-01's eyes lit up again, and its mouth split open in a savage grin.
It was roaring.
Even after losing its external power supply, it had restarted.
A weapon of that size should have required a colossal amount of energy to operate, and yet it had awakened all the same.
"Berserk…!"
Ritsuko Akagi stared in shock at Unit-01 gone wild.
An inhuman roar echoed through the darkened city.
The air itself trembled around it.
Unit-01 crouched low, then leaped lightly into the air, flipping backward and landing directly in front of Sachiel—
no, not just in front of it.
It landed squarely on top of the Angel.
Standing on Sachiel's massive black body, Unit-01 casually severed the spike protruding from the Angel's chest with the strength of a single hand.
Then it burst into a sprint and charged the enemy again.
Sachiel straightened to face this foe that had suddenly recovered, and in an instant it deployed its AT Field.
Layer upon layer of geometric barrier blocks bloomed into existence between Sachiel and Unit-01.
Without breaking through an Angel's AT Field, it was impossible to even touch one.
Unit-01 took two light steps backward, its damaged arm restoring itself in an instant, then drove both hands into the barrier and began tearing at it with brute force.
Its own Absolute Terror Field had already unfolded.
The same power collided against the same power, neutralizing, canceling, grinding against each other.
But this was not mere cancellation.
Unit-01's field was eroding Sachiel's.
Half a minute later, the Absolute Terror Field that no conventional weapon had been able to break was ripped apart like a scrap of rotten cloth.
Roaring, Unit-01 brutalized the Angel before it.
It tore off Sachiel's arms, rammed into its body again and again, pinned it beneath itself, and ripped apart the spine-like structure protruding from its chest.
Then, gripping the enemy's own bones in its hand, it brought them crashing down wildly against that crimson orb.
Sachiel had no way to resist.
It could not drive its attacker off, could not defend itself, could not make its own attacks work.
All it could do was collapse helplessly on the ground and let the ferocious Unit-01 ravage it.
A few minutes later, unable to bear the humiliation any longer, it coiled itself around Unit-01 and self-destructed.
It split apart.
The same Sachiel that had displayed such overwhelming, invincible power not long before had met such a miserable end.
No one had imagined things would turn out like this.
The commanders of the Japanese military were left in stunned silence.
Their power had been useless.
At best, it had amounted to giving the Angel a pedicure.

Asuka brushed a strand of crimson hair behind her ear, a smug smile curving across her lips as her scarlet eyes gleamed in the evening light.

She was already impatient to see herself trampling Angels beneath her feet while Shinji Ikari stood before her teary-eyed, begging to cling to her leg.
Sure, the brat's Eva-handling skills were sloppy, and he was timid and weak-willed, but… well, he was barely acceptable.
At least he had not outright run away, or simply stood there and watched Rei Ayanami climb into Unit-01 in his place.

The power displayed by Unit-01, which so many orcs had dismissed, filled the Warchief with anxiety.
He was an orc who had crossed into this distant world through the Dark Portal.
If orcs could come to the lands beyond, then humans from other worlds must also have some way of reaching Azeroth.
And if they did, they might well come to aid the humans here against the orcs.
