Later That Day…
The sun dipped low, casting gold light through the crystal domes of the kingdom. Clara returned home glowing not from the crown, but from how the day had gone. She had completed her first official Queen tasks, helping resolve a seaweed harvest dispute, organizing a school visit for baby merlings and speaking with a group of older mermaids about their village needs. She spoke kindly, asked questions and truly listened.
With Kai by her side for part of it and her sisters (well, most of them) cheering her on, Clara had finally felt like she belonged. Maybe being Queen wouldn't be so scary after all.
As she floated into her room, Pens zipped around her head. "Soooo... how was your secret Kai adventure ?"
Clara smirked, trying to keep her expression cool. "It wasn't a date."
Mini popped up from under her pillow, his eyes wide and mischievous. "Was it a royal not-date ? Did he bow ? Did he hold your fin while you looked at the pretty anemones ?"
Clara threw a piece of coral fluff at him. "You two are the worst. He just took me to see some jellyfish. We played around in the bubbles for a bit and that's all. It was just a friendly visit to clear my head."
Pebs did a dramatic loop-de-loop. "Oh, just jellyfish ? Was it a romantic jellyfish parade ? Did the light from their bells reflect in his dreamy blue eyes while he told you how brave you are ?"
"Yeah !" Mini added, wiggling his eyebrows. "I bet the jellyfish were dancing in the shape of a heart ! Was there singing ? I bet there was singing."
Mini and Pebs sang in harmony, "Claaaara and Kaiiii, sittin' in a coral tree…"
She giggled, hiding her red cheeks behind a pillow. "Ugh, someone must crown you two the court jesters. Honestly, you're more work than the seaweed harvest dispute !"
"We're just keeping you humble, Your Majesty," Mini teased, darting in to poke her arm. "Can't have the Queen getting too distracted by silver-tailed boys when there are shells to sort !"
But deep down, as Clara looked at her reflection in the mirror, with her messy hair, a smudge of coral dust on her cheek and the crown still perched slightly crooked, she smiled. Her world was changing, her duties were real. And her heart ? Well… it was swimming right along with it.

The Next Day
The Throne Hall,
The grand throne hall of Aquaria was buzzing with movement as the royal counselors, elders and noble mermaids and mermen swam into the chamber. The soft hum of concern filled the water as they took their seats in the coral benches lined with pearls and kelp. However, as more news arrived from the outer reefs, the hum turned into a roar of panicked voices.
Elder Mylo, a blue-scaled merman with deep lines across his face, slammed his trident into the coral floor. "This cannot go on any longer ! First the schools of silverbacks vanished, then the pearlfish. Our waters are growing empty."
"And now even the moonfish near the coral ridge are gone !" Elder Vali, a sharp-voiced mermaid with a string of sea pearls in her hair, chimed in. "Something strange is happening. This is no ordinary migration !"
Counsellor Elion, a wise merman with a long flowing beard, drifted forward with a look of deep worry. "It is worse than just the disappearing fish, Mylo. My scouts report that the very bounty of the sea is turning against us. The sea-grapes and the star-fruits we harvest from the deep gardens... they are bitter. They taste of rot and strange, sharp chemicals. Several merfolk have fallen ill after eating them. Even the food and fruits seemed to be poisoned."
The room erupted into shouting. Elders began to wave their arms, their voices clashing like stormy waves. They spoke of strange, clear skins floating in the current that choked the younglings, things that didn't look like any plant they knew. They spoke of black, oily clouds that smelled of death and made the water sting their eyes.
"It is the surface !" one elder shouted. "Strange metal objects falling from above, leaking grey death into our homes !"
"Litter !" another cried. "The currents are filled with their jagged waste and poisoned things that do not belong in the Great Deep !"
Amidst the chaos, a figure moved to the center of the hall. It was Calantha, the room fell silent out of respect for her age. "I have lived through many tides," Calantha whispered, her voice raspy but clear. "But never have I felt the heart of the ocean so sick. We do not know what causes this invisible plague, but it smells of the world above. It feels like the heavy hand of the humans reaching down to choke us."
Whispers rippled across the room.
Queen Haisly sat tall and calm in her throne. "Peace," she said, raising her hand. "Let everyone speak."
A younger counselor, Sir Brinn, floated up. "We suspect foul magic… or a predator not from this ocean."
The room murmured again, anxious tails swishing.
King Orion stood slowly, his deep voice echoing. "Then it is time we find out the truth. I will gather my best men and go beyond the reef to the deep trench. We will speak to the remaining fish. We will investigate this matter."
Gasps.
"You can't !" Elder Mylo said sharply. "Your Majesty, with all due respect, it's too dangerous. If something is taking our sea life, what if it takes you too ? You can't leave the palace unprotected at this moment,"
Queen Haisly's hand gripped her throne. "I agree. We must protect our King."
Suddenly, from the front rows, Kai swam forward confidently. His bronze scales shimmered under the light, his voice calm and sure. "If I may speak," he said respectfully. "As son of Counselor Elion and a trained sea scout, I volunteer to go instead."
All eyes turned to him.
"My friends and I are fast, trained and unknown to whatever is out there. We won't be suspected. We'll find answers."
Before anyone could respond, the great doors opened. Clara entered, graceful and poised, her crown shimmered, her face calm but pale. She looked exactly like the heir of the seven oceans, her long pink hair flowing behind her like a trail of light. Everyone stood and bowed deeply.
"Greetings, your Highness," they said in unison.
Clara nodded kindly. "Thank you. I apologize for being late." She swam up and sat beside her mother, Queen Haisly, who gave her a gentle smile.
King Orion looked at Clara and then to the court. "Let the future Queen decide. Clara, this is your time to lead."
Clara sat up straighter, surprised but steady. She looked out at the angry, worried faces of the elders and felt the weight of the Liraen Heart against her chest. She took a deep breath and when she spoke, her voice was not that of a scared girl, but of a ruler.
"Very well. Someone please explain what has happened from the beginning."
Elder Vali cleared her throat. "Several species of fish have disappeared without trace over the last moon cycle. First, we thought it was migration but now even seaweed herders claim their flocks are gone. Something is taking our sea creatures. And we fear it will only grow worse. The elders are afraid, your Highness ! We are being poisoned in our own beds !"
The shouting started again, but Clara didn't flinch. She raised her hand and there was such a quiet power in her gesture that the elders stopped mid-shout.
"Elders, Counselors," Clara said, her voice wise and soothing. "Fear is a current that only leads to the rocks. Shouting will not clean the water and panic will not bring the fish back. We are the children of the Seven Oceans. We do not break when the tide turns. We find a way to swim through it. I hear your worries about the sickness and the waste and I promise you, we will find the source. But I need your wisdom, not your anger. Please, listen to the silence of the sea and help us find the path forward."
The hall fell into a stunned, peaceful silence. They had expected her to cry or hide, but instead, she had calmed them with ease. Clara nodded slowly, then turned to Kai. "And you wish to go investigate ?"
"Yes, your Highness," Kai said, his voice formal. "We will move quietly and quickly and we will not stir panic. We will report only to the court."
Clara's eyes locked on his. How can she send him out there ? It's so dangerous, but what other choice does she have ? "Then I will allow it. You have one week. Choose the most loyal guards, ones we can trust fully." She leaned forward. "And this must remain secret. If the people find out, they'll panic. Right now we don't want that, so promise me."
"I swear it, your Highness," Kai replied with a smile and Clara nodded smiling back. Anyone could see how this two looked at each other. They couldn't even hide it !
Just then, the doors opened again, this time, slower. Cleo entered, her face unreadable. She looked at Clara sitting on the throne, surrounded by the respect of the elders and her jaw tightened. She hated bowing before Clara, hated the way her younger sister seemed to fit so easily into a role she had spent her life wanting. But with everyone watching, she had no choice. Slowly, stiffly, she bowed to her.
"Your Highness," Cleo said, voice cool.
Clara glanced at her mother. Queen Haisly nodded. "You may rise, sister," She gentlyspoke up.
Cleo straightened, her eyes flashing with a hidden fire. Behind her respectful actions, she was fuming. She wanted to show everyone that she should have been Queen instead of the weak Clara who stayed behind in the palace and sent guards to do her job. To Cleo, a real Queen should be on the front lines, not sitting on coral cushions giving speeches.
Cleo addressed the hall. "I wish to go with Kai."
Everyone blinked.
"You ?" King Orion said, brows raised.
Cleo nodded. "I am the strongest fighter among the princesses. I know the reefs, I speak multiple sea dialects and I've trained with the royal guards. I have more than enough skill. Unlike some, I do not believe a ruler should hide behind others while the ocean suffers."
"You're also a princess," Clara said carefully. "It's dangerous."
"I can handle danger, you said this must be secret and if anything happens to Kai or his team, what then ? I can protect them." Cleo snapped.
There was a pause.
Clara stared at her sister, heart heavy. She could see the jealousy in Cleo's eyes, the desire to prove herself better. "Fine. But promise me… you'll be careful. And Kai…" She turned to him. "Protect her."
Kai bowed. "With my life."
The court murmured again. Then Elder Mylo raised a new concern. "Your Highness, what of the creatures ? Even the sea turtles and eels seem spooked. They flee before we get near. Something in the ocean is making them restless," he said to Clara.
Clara stood up slowly. "I can speak to them, It's one of my gifts," she simply said. Her voice turned soft and strong. "I will reach out to the animals and calm them. I will do my part here while the team searches out there. For now please do your best and keep our Kingdom safe out there."
The hall fell silent, then applause echoed like a soft wave. As the elders bowed and began to leave the chamber, King Orion smiled proudly. "Well done, Clara, that was true leadership," her father said.
Cleo looked at them and scoffed. True leadership ? She'll show them what true leadership is !!
